Going to. Be at Zion for three days at the end of March. Looking for both photography tips/best places to shoot and general advice on the best places to hike. I will be there with my family and the youngest is nine. I'm guessing she's gonna be good for six miles at a time max. I very much want to do the Subway from the bottom up, but I just don't know if it's in the cards. I would hate to take one whole day away from the family to do it.

So, where should I go and what should I do? Have at it!

From previous posts, I’m sure you aren’t afraid of wading, but to reach the Subway, you will be wading the Virgin River once you reach the end of the road. During March, the water will be pretty cold, and could be deep. Definitely go Kolob Canyons, exit 40 off I-15. There are several trails around there and great scenery. Highway 9, east from Springdale, takes you through the tunnels, and gives access to a slot canyon at the east end of the long tunnel. If you continue east after leaving the park, 12 scenic miles will bring you to Mt. Carmel Junction, on US 89. From there, you can continue south on 89 for another 17 miles and you will be in Kanab. I have found lodging to be cheaper there than in Springdale, and there is much to see and for the kid to enjoy.

Assuming that you are heading home on I-15, if you have time, you might consider taking US 89 north to I-70 as a way back home. It’s about 40 miles further that way, but you’ll see much more scenery.

NPS Map is at //www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/upload/Zion-Park-Map-Website.pdf
Hope you have a great time. I’ll be heading that way in April or early May.

Thanks! I'll start checking it out. Bump for the morning crowd for more advice.

There's a hiking trail that connects the Emerald Pools to the Lodge that provides a great view down the valley from midway up. (It's a pretty easy and relatively short one compared to many of the other available hikes.)

I've never hiked any of the rim trails but I want too! We were going to hike Angels Landing but I had a head cold and didn't want to push my luck. I'm told the vistas from there are incredible. Maybe someone else can fill in that blank.

We went in October when it was just starting to get cold.) First snow happened the day before we arrived. It'll definitely by cold in March.

Emerald pools is nice. But I'd stay away from Hidden Canyon with the kids. Major scrambling, long drops, need to use a chain for a handrail so you don't fall.

I completely agree! My parents didn't get this advice when my sister and I were younger. It was quite the harrowing experience (for my parents ... we were jumping all over the place). ;) I think my mom actually screamed at one point and my dad made us sit so he could recover.

Thanks for the advice, although I've looked into both Hidden Canyon and Angel's Landing and think my kids would be up for it. I'll talk to scarbrd. I'm pretty sure he did Angel's Landing with his son who is Caden's age.

Actually I'm the one who gets the most wobbly legs with heights. Most of the time I can work through it though. ;)

Hi
You might contact Bret Edge (Photographer, Moab, Utah). He went backpacking there a few months ago for the purpose of photography
and hiking with his young son. He knows the area well and is very open to sharing. We were there in October and then used him
as a guide in Moab and found him a great resource for the area.
