Sincere question! I'm sure my question will draw sneers, but are there any landscape photography images which would be considered ART by the voting members here?

//www.johnfielder.com
//www.grapevinegalleryokc.com/ward1.htm
Ansel Adams Colorado

I have had a few members here tell me that landscape images are not creative. But, maybe those are just my landscape images.

JMO, 'creative' & 'art' are not necessarily the same thing.
If you can frame it & hang it on the wall for people to admire is it art? Maybe.
IMO art is not an object but an event. Art is not something that is, it's something that happens.
When I look at art, something happens between me & the thing I'm looking at.
This is my idea of a landscape that is art

I'm still of the opinion that all photography is art.

This would be a challenge where I would probably give huge bonuses to landscape entries because I find the topic of segregating photography into "art" and "the rest" a presumptuous affair.

A few of my favorites from the last Art Challenge that continue to inspire me--

Then tell me what does "photographic in nature" mean?

So it seems the popularity of the year long shoot date, any sort of editing allowed, emphasis on capital A ART image challenge is high.

One question. What is difference between this challenge and submitting to 1X?

That would make my passport photo "art".

That totally depends on the submitting artist.

It would actually get posted?

Something that looks like it came out of a camera.

Sure, why not?

I'm not of the opinion that 'all photography is art'.

What about medical photography? Forensic photography? nah

Documentary photography and reportage? I don't think so. The main function is to document and report.

Of course, they can be art, but that's not the same thing.

Actually, I was the one who suggested the original Art of 2011 challenge, because I had a number of shots that I felt were more "artistic" than my normal type of shots -- which I characterize more as documentary. I don't consider myself as an artist. I take pictures of what I see. I think the artists on the site have much more imagination than I do and are much more creative. So the Art of 2011 was my opportunity to look at my work with a different eye and perhaps for others to look at it with a different perspective, as well.

Art vs photography is such an interesting discussion. I think it's worth revisiting each year. They're not mutually exclusive, but I also don't believe it's all inclusive.

I think this is more of a documentary shot:

I think this is more of an art shot:

Some probably consider neither art -- some may consider both.

There are very few things in my portfolio that I consider art -- most of it I consider photography.

So for many -- it may very well be the same as a best of challenge -- but for others, it may give a great opportunity to really explore.

If there's ever been subjectivity over a definition, this is it.

My stance is it's just another best of challenge with fewer landscape photos for some reason.

You haven't seen my passport photo...never has a more artless image been made.

Naw -- an excuse for people to feel comfortable with their wild side. :)

+1
And look what you were inspired to enter!

What could be more of a work of art than this?

I'm not sure if anyone told you, you don't have to enter every challenge on here, neither do you have to comment in every single thread that pops up on here, but then again maybe you have nothing better to do!

I'll have to really let go of the reins then. I'd hate for people to think I've been tame these last couple of challenges.

Oh I think this would be great! I don't have an art folder but I think I'll start one for 2013...I will call it "overexposed in sun by ten minutes!!" Painters would call it a blank canvas!!!

Just ramp the glamour glow up to infinity, it's almost the same effect.

Landscapes are essential to art. The landscape was an innovation of Romantic artists, the removal of the human story from Creation, an emphasis on compositional elements, leading eventually to complete abstraction.

I would hate to have all those artistic gems from 2012 going to waste never to be appreciated by DPC voters. How about we go ahead and do this one?

would be interesting to look through with a different eye...

Actually -- I think I have one in mind already...
