I'm not a 500px user, but couldn't help but notice this - //edition.cnn.com/2013/01/23/tech/mobile/apple-nude-photo-app/?iref=obinsite
What's going on here?

The issue is that 500px does not flag any photograph as adult material if it needs to. those material's are categorized same as other (when it comes to display) and hence it was available in there 500px iphone application too. Since iPhone is easy to operate kids are opening it and can navigate easily as they dont have any notification or blocking a part of the system. On other end android 500px application does not have nude category and it is not available to android users (as far as I know).

Just takes a click on your profile page to not see nudes:

Yes it does. When you upload a photo, you HAVE to mark it safe for work or not. And as smaraz showed you have the option not to view it. 500px did its part.

On a side note. It would be nice if a few prudes didn't determine the content the whole rest of us are allowed to see by having large companies cater to them, But alas we have choices, I for one have never thought Apple their worth what you give up to use them. Besides, why is apple policing what should a parental responsibility?

I had to go back and actually read the quoted texts, because it didn't sound quite right... :)

You're just now realizing this? It's what Apple does. They handhold their customers like children. Apple 'lets' you do X,Y, Z and only X, Y, Z. If you're a power user and want to be in control of how you use your gadgets, you have two options: jailbreak or switch to a company that treats you like an adult.

Actually, I kind of like the hand-holding. I'm a techie, but I also like my gadgets to just work and be good at what they're designed to do without any fiddling. To date I've yet to find something I haven't been able to do on my iPhone - There's always an app for it. And their 'policing' is mainly intended to make sure the App Store isn't full of crap.

And btw, I just asked Siri to 'show me a naked woman', and it fulfilled the request in about 2 seconds flat. So not only are they *not* policing me, they're making it quicker and easier to find naked people on the internet than ever before!

Siri is a courteous babysitter, I'll give you that.

no, it definitely serves its purpose. the app experience is top notch, but this isn't some dumb little app that is making waves. apple users have been waiting for a 500px app and just barbecue it shows or has the ability to show not even porn but nude photography apples decides its not for their users? the only thing that apple or any appstore should care about is if the apps are malware of not.

but then again, they have the right to do what they please, i have the option not to use them. until they start losing customers, why should they change?

So please tell me what is the holy grail of mobile operating systems that I appear to be missing out on?

What is this magical OS that allows the user to configure and modify their phone to install any app or content they want without fuss? That offers a watertight guarantee of security and privacy and will under no circumstances attempt to advertise to or otherwise make money out of their end users now or in the future? And where is this app store that offers high-quality free apps unimpeded by developer policies or censoring?

Because whoever they are, I'd like to know how they plan to make money.

Well if you want security you have no choice. Otherwise Its root/jailbreak and sideload yourself.

I don't know what the app looks like, but I do know that you can choose as a user to not reveal the NSFW images; however there are several posters that do NOT mark their work as NSFW so it really doesn't much matter.
There is also, I think, a difference between nude, art, and just plain naked and some of the just plain naked borders on, if not crosses into, pornography.
I have not spent a lot of time surfing 500px but so far I haven't seen anything that looks like child pornography (thankfully). I've seen worse on facebook, Instragram, DeviantArt, tumblr and more, even just a Google or Amazon ebook search can yield some interesting results.

Honestly I think our world is quickly losing any semblence of common sense and our technological advances have allowed or enabled people to be more anonymous, bold, daring, uncaring or whatever word you want to use, or at least feel like they are, and then that eventually culminates into believing that's okay in their personal interactions as well. We're a world of reaction (including over-reaction) and then maybe looking at what the real issue might be.

Also, from what I got out of the story, the other side of the issue is the ratings equity or inequity. Just as another poster touched on, there are so many apps out there from A-Z in type, quality, security, rating, content, etc. how can all of that be monitored? "Money makes the world go 'round." "Money talks."
"Money is our madness, our vast collective madness."

I won't normally share my thoughts to this level but wanted to share my two cents.
