Can somebody please explain Flickr to me?

So you submit photos and people just say how wonderful your images are and give you all kinds of icon trinkets?

Is there ever actual constructive commenting/criticism, or is it just an ego boost?

I like flickr for the groups and the local events and what not.... far better for that then other sites. If your just after posting pictures... yeah little point IMO as well.

Most groups are fluff. But the strobist and photoshop groups are very good. Useful in that they post shot details and frequently discuss advanced lighting and photoshop techniques.

Plus, public reaction really helps me judge what folks generally respond to. I'm often surprised by what garners attention.

For me the strength of Flickr is in the groups. I can find a user group for almost any piece of hardware or software I own. For instance, I use Corel PaintShop Pro, but if I ask an editing question on DPC, most people here assume I am using some Adobe product. On Flickr, I can ask in the PSP group.

I also use Flickr for hosting images to use on other forums.

As far as the comments and trinkets, yes, it's just fluff. Most of the people leaving a "best image evah!" award on your photo would like you to return the favor. It's cheap praise.

Thanks for the info about the groups. I just thought they were groups of photographers of a like mind who gather and shower another with awards.

I will explore more.

Flickr also has a top-notch API, which makes it easy to use in your own websites or whatever.

There are many groups like that. I don't participate in such cheap praise commenting groups. Some of the groups I have found most useful, as examples:

-Corel PaintShop Pro
-Local meetup group
-General group for my local area.
-Groups set up for posting photos and discussions of special events (Yearly WWII reenactment, for instance)
-Groups for my specific camera gear

Beyond what Spiff said (which is absolutely correct), I use it for posting pictures that I want my friends to see, but don't want on my website. If I want actual feedback on a picture, I ask here.
