He didn't say he would vote it down; he said he'd give it a lower score. He said a literal image would get a lower score from him. That's not the same as "voting down" and if y'all could back off a little for a bit you'd realize what we have here is a failure to communicate.

I'll happily join Richard in saying I give higher scores to imaginative entries and lower scores to cookie-cutter solutions. Is there ANYONE here who can say the opposite with a straight face?

I'm sorry -- you are exactly right, bear. I completely misread that.

But I still wish people would just stop making prejudgements on photos. Why not simply wait until the show up in a challenge and see what happens? Who knows? You may be pleasantly surprised.

I think there's a place for trying to live within and trying to live outside of the challenge. And I would rather people be open minded enough to deal with both. Can't we wait until the challenge starts before we decide how we're going to vote? As one who tries to stick to the challenge details, it can be annoying when people completely ignore them. But while I don't have much patience for a blue square in a white challenge, I still spend a lot of time trying to figure out what others are trying to get at, even if I don't "get it" on the first or second go around, and I give a lot of latitude on what I feel fits the description.

oh well.

I'm done. I guess we've learned that narrow challenges are just too hard all the way around. Posthumous for president so that we have no challenge descriptions.

Oh boy, now that's rich.

So just because YOU (and a few others like you) don't agree with something, you take it upon yourself to punish everybody who actually does exactly what is asked of them? Not because the photo is bad, but because it delivers what it was supposed to deliver, instead of what YOUR ideal interpretation of it is.

Heaven help the bride who might decide to hire you to shoot her wedding. I guess she'd only get a few mountains, cloud formations and a photo of a little pebble, because that is what YOU feel presents a marriage/wedding best.

Wow. I hope my tongue won't start bleeding from all the biting on it that I'm doing right now.

Very well said IMO.

Thanks, Bear_Music. I don't always communicate well. My votes and comments have always been fair and objective. At 700 challenges entered and 107,000 votes cast, I am not too worried about what the tear- down sharks say.

Regardless of what people say, I'll treat each image in every challenge as a unique and special image. The more creative and excellent images will receive higher scores. But, that's always been true with my voting. If someone has a problem with that, then they should report me to the SC for arraying the images from best (10) to worst (1). I thought that was what we were supposed to do.

To Beetle, Strikeslip and beatabg. You were the straws which broke the camel's back. You didn't necessarily do anything wrong, but it was a cumulative effect at the end.

I suppose there's a bit of poignant irony (and a nicely mixed metaphor as well) that the straw that broke the camel's back came at a fork in the road :-(

Wow. I wasn't actually the one arguing, paraphrasing, or anything like that. I thought I'd let the rest do it. I only agreed with Beetle because she said something I was thinking for a long time. But yeah I am so bad! Thanks :)

One of the joys of my departure from DPC is I no longer need to suffer such indignations. Enjoy your tenure at DPC.

Ah, so you say something negative about me in your post and then accuse me of indignation? Makes a lot of sense. And thank you, I will enjoy it :)

Frankly, I don't think I said anything negative about you. But, I do know you for your lack of integrity. It will be a major relief to not have to be in the same forum with members like you. Let me know when you reach 100 challenges or 25,000 votes cast. I predict you never will.

I'm genuinely happy to see your relief, but I almost don't post things in the forum. About challenges I will start participating more since now I will be able to afford some equipment (I own only one lens at the moment and no photoshop) and a digital photography class (I'm still way too used to my darkroom). But yeah, despite some financial problems I do look at pictures, comment and vote since I joined in September.

Wow, what a read. I was looking at the challenge for the first time and thought "wow, what an odd description, Oh good, look here is a thread than might help me understand"

A whole lot of heat, very little light.

But it sure was an interesting read.

To repeat something I said on here in the past - I'm waiting for a challenge of 'Brown Dog'. I'm going to submit a pic of white cat. Then I'm going to bleat and whinge when it gets voted low. I mean FFS, if you don't want to be restricted in what you shoot, then only enter Free Studies. Sheesh.

I probably could... but then again I have years of practice. :O)

Not me. I can't say anything with a straight face - it's always slightly askew.

Really now... and just how did you arrive at that conclusion.

Do have a wonderful time away from this venue that is seemingly such a source of aggravation to you. :O)

Ah but you see my friend there is a monumental amount of difference between what you are saying and what Richard is advocating.

You are saying that you will give higher scores to imaginative entries, whereas he is stating for a fact that he will give lower scores for literal images... there is a difference and a monumental one at that.

There is no disputing the fact that creativity has an inherent value in venues such as this, but assuming that the creative mind fails to associate the image to the challenge then I fear that the effort, is for naught.

It could very well be that my understanding of the English language is not at par with the majority of the members of this site, but from my perspective there is a monumental amount of difference between what you said and the views expressed by Richard.

Do take the time to correct me if I am wrong.

PS: Send me an email... I have some syrup for you. :O)

Ray, disregard everything else I said and look at my first sentence; that's the bottom line of the discussion. Richard never said he'd vote anything down,a very negative thing to do. He said he'd give a lower score to literal interpretations, a reasonable position IMO.

Dang, I didn't see this until just now. Wow. My fault, I guess. I have the same effect on people at Black Jack tables. I'll have to try to figure out what Beetle and beatabg did. Right now it looks to me like it's because their user names are similar, and similar names piss me off too, so I can understand that.

Judging by all the sorrowful goodbyes on hahn's bye bye thread, I should probably make an apology thread to express my remorse for the way I've wronged DPC.

Naw, Strikeslip. You dun nuthin' wrong.
Now to get this back on topic, I wanna know where - and at what tables - do you play blackjack.

I need to get a little more loot substance in my retirement account.
Now, I think I know where to get it.

PS. do you hold or stay on 16?

It's because I don't always play the way a robot would play, and some people think that somehow ruins their hands. I'm just there for the complimentary drinks while playing for gosh sake.

Oh, you bet. (ahem)
Me too. I was there for the company!
and of course, to add to my retirement fund.
Heh, heh, you didn't answer my question.

BlackJack starts with a B. Your meme entry title "Busted" begins with a B. Beetle & beatabg. I get a double strike with two Bs. I see a connection...
