I don't care that strongly about this particular issue, except to be of the opinion that the war on drugs is a racist failure, but I'm hoping for some entertaining discussion.

Denver Pot Holiday Bringing Crowds, Tight Security

I hate walking down the street behind a wreaking cigarette smoker, or through their clouds of stench at building doorways. I think ALL smoking, tobacco or pot or anything, should be outlawed in public because it infringes on my right to clean lungs.

FYI to all smokers... you look really stupid standing around smoking.

Idiots. Grab a beer or whiskey for crissakes.

Such a tricky issue. Sure, you should be able to not be subjected to things you don't like - but even though I quit smoking, I still find a smoky diesel far more irritating than event the most pungent cigar, and some people are really bothered by loud noises - me? I hate bad smells, like that rancid grease smell that pervades city alleyways where restaurants are operating - while others have a huge issue with women showing their faces in public and giving them dirty thoughts.

The point here is this: We have to tolerate each other to some degree, and while the smokers really should stand away from the doorway, you should also respect their right to pollute their lungs while you soak your liver. :)

Just my thoughts. Besides, on topic here, I'd WAY rather be in a room full of pot smoke than a room full of tobacco smoke - nowhere near as offensive, as it doesn't have that just pungent smell of tobacco. And technically, I think smoking pot in public IS illegal even in Colorado, it's just that they tend to look the other way on 4/20.

But I don't spit whiskey into their mouths as they walk down the sidewalk, so they should quit exhaling, at least while in public. And it sure does wreak if a someone who just finished a smoke sits next to me on the train. Very inconsiderate humans.

You must not realize how strongly whiskey smells. :)

I do admit to finding the aroma of the cigarette smoker more offensive, they can indeed reek - but so can someone who's been drinking heavily.

And one of the most carcinogenic substances in the world is a byproduct of combusting diesel fuel.

Besides, all of the evidence is that incidental exposure is very unlikely to have any effect on you. It's annoying, but not dangerous. Now, live with a chain-smoker, and keep the windows shut for 10 or 20 years? Yeah, that's a risk for sure.

Cory, I've already invoked the image of ZAP, which indicates that I have handily thrashed you in the debate of smoke versus booze breath. Don't make me bring yo mamma into this.

Huh? My mother? I think we're all against smoking methamphetamine in public or in private, that much we can agree on for sure.. Good idea, bringing my mother into this! lol.

Don't know about you, but where I live I rarely have the opportunity to walk behind cigarette smokers and I also do not have to walk through the stench you mention in doorways since they have to be some 10 metres (I think) away from the doorway.

Now, if they had more stringent rules about the stench of some perfumes while aboard an aircraft, the awful smell around paper mills, the clouds of smoke near smelters, and the stench originating from diesel powered vehicle... that is something that I would gladly support.

PS: NO I don't smoke

Ray

This is correct. To be fair, they "looked the other way" for a long while even before the amendment was passed. In Boulder (which, granted, IS Boulder) there were hundreds who would smoke pot on 4/20 enmasse with zero repercussions.

But separate to the legality is the defacto impact the amendment has had. Because it is technically legal, people are seen using the substance in public in FAR greater numbers and with much more brazen display than in the past. Drivers who smoked before passage quickly began smoking in their cars upon approval. Keep in mind, the DUID criteria have not changed.

And personally, I find cigarettes more annoying, particularly when you can tell a chainsmoker was in the elevator for 45 minutes prior to your arrival. It's easier to get rid of campfire smell from your person than cigarettes.
On the other hand, being around cigarettes won't possibly make me fail a drug test at my employer.

im curious as how that works. I'm sure you'll never be able to be high on the job, but how does drug testing work now that pot is legal?

Honestly, I think it's a gray area at current. I think employers would still be in the right because they could just argue the federal law, which trumps state anyway. It's a federally controlled substance, but I don't know of test cases yet. Having said that, I am a state employee these days, so I have little to no doubt on where the initial response would tend.

I'm self-employed and I have implemented a drug testing program. I haven't tested them all yet, but I'm getting closer.

Actually, this is controlled by their insurance requirements. They'll still be testing, people will still be buying fake urine, it's a pretty interesting niche-economy really.
