I am planning to get into photography business (on site portrait shooting, event photography in and around Houston, Texas), I have been shooting for a while but never thought of shooting for living until now. I have registered the company and now I am shopping for insurance any suggestion regarding what kind of insurance should I opt and name of insurance company will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you've incorporated or formed an LLC I think you'll need business/commercial insurance. If you have a sole proprietorship and a house, you can usually get a $1million general liability rider added to your homeowner's policy for a nominal amount ($30-50?) which covers practically anything.

Maybe get a referral from the local Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce -- it would also let them know you exist, even if you're not joining ...

If you are a member of the PPA, you can go through them to get insurance as well.

Thanks all for your valuable info, this helps me a lot. Another question do we need Business Licenses as well in Texas?

Business licenses are usually handled by county or city government. If you have a sales tax, you may have to get a resale license and file another tax return for that.

I recommend checking your library for books from Nolo Press -- they are long-time publishers of legal how-to books for non-lawyers, full of info on business structure, accounting, taxes, licenses, etc.

You at least need a DBA in Texas, call your County Clerks office to get more info.

You do need the sales tax and resale license too, in the DBA name.

Thanks again,

I have registered the company as LLC, if I upload client's pics to smugmug and allow client to buy it from smugmug(i can set up price in smugmug's web site) even then I have to go through sale tax and resale license?

You might want to drop skip a PM. He's up on all the details of
photography as a business and has been incredibly helpful to lots of DPCers.

I would check with the tax accessor's office on this. I know there have been changes in what you can charge tax for and what you can't in the past few years. Would hate to see them come after you because you missed a tax.
