If I had a dollar for every time I asked that question I would have a dollar. Anyways I had an image I was going to enter into the light and shadow challenge. I chickened out and didn't enter it. It looked way too soft to me and just like a regular snapshot.

Does it look soft?

Probably the focus is at the beginning of the hands. Otherwise it shouldn't be so soft - but of course the face is not so sharp.

Have you tried to sharpen it after resizing?

No I didn't I see some detail in the face but I can't figure out if its out of focus or from the face no light is hitting me.

I think your focus, as Alessandro pointed out, is on the front edge of the hands. The knuckles look pretty sharp.

Yes, there is some front focus. Look in particular at the top of the hood. You can clearly see the focus plane is nearly at the front edge. As previous posters have opined, the front of the hands also looks sharper than the face, though it's not as apparent.

Yeah you guys are probably right. I was using f/10 so the lack distance between the 2 makes the face softer.

Next time, please wait until the Outtakes thread is (automatically) posted at rollover after the voting to post images related to the challenge. Or, at least just ask the question ("Is this soft") without relating it to a challenge still in voting.

My camera's smallest aperture is f/8.0 ... :-(

This is the easiest way to tell in that photo that it is front focused a bit.

you also have a much smaller image sensor so you have a much wider DOF :)

Yes ... I'm actually surprised at how shallow I can get it sometimes, and with the close-up lens added on the DOF is about 3mm ...
