Yes, I've seen the video about how he did it...
Without the video I would have been convinced that it was a photoshop trick. But not so.

I guess I don't see the art in this. There are a number of ways to create what looks like a cloud in a room... with out raising the humidity to the point that you have water dripping off everything. I guess that is why there is so many different art forms out there, we all like different things, but this one just doesn't do anything for me, no matter how scientifically it's done.

it would have been way cooler if he figured out a way to make it out of some sort of material, so they could be sculptures just hanging there, unchanging.

Yet the fact that he got the idea of bringing a typical outdoor phenomenon indoors and photographs it there makes it original and art.

Well thank you Eli. I'm glad you've brought this to our attention.
I wonder now if Johanna proceeded in the same way to create the clouds.
Here series is as stunning as the one of Berndnaut Smilde.

I love Johanna's clouds and related photography. I hope she shares with us how she did it.

Oh goodness! Thanks guys, you made my day!

Yes, Berndnaut Smilde's images were what inspired me to do my series. I like the idea that clouds are diaphanous, transient, ephemeral, and I wanted to put them indoors in places that seemed very solid and earthbound. A sort of spirit/body approach to a location, inserting a "human" element into it. I'm not that scientific, so I created the clouds in photoshop. I liked the challenge of creating realistic-looking clouds by factoring in light source, directionality, and environment (would there be light beams streaming through because it's dusty, or not). I also played around with color, from both the environment, and from the tonal range of sunlight, plus the myriad of grays that exist in each cloud. Finally, I gave the clouds shadows if it was logical to do so.

It's the same idea behind my "ghosts". Although the ghosts in this series are not photoshopped; just lots, and lots, and LOTS of cloth tossing.
