I know this will offend some people, but I have to get it out.

The top 3 Black on Black winners are photographs of pets. To me that is really symptomatic for DPC, the quality of photographs, and the common users.

Flame away.

IMO it's perfectly fair to express an opinion like this. Pets photos, when well taken, usually get good scores. The same we can say of children, water drops etc. etc.

But in this case, especially the Blue ribbon, is a very good portrait. No difference with a studio picture of a model.

There weren't a lot of choices for this challenge, imo. You are much more limited in your creativity in black on black than you are for something like white on white. I had the option of shooting my black cat, or doing a photo of an object. I went for the challenge of trying to photograph the cat (It's a lot more difficult than you think, since he's two, and extremely active.)

If it had been white on white, I could have looked for seagulls or egrets, etc. But with the black background and the black subject, I couldn't think of anything available to me other than inanimate objects or a cat. I thought the cat was more interesting.

What would you have entered that would have been more interesting? It sounds like a snarky question -- but it really isn't. I actually was excited to do a portrait of Mo, because I never really sat down and purposely tried a black on black portrait setup with him -- and I've seen some beautifully shot photos. Mine didn't stand up to what I had envisioned, but I thoroughly enjoyed the process. However, I also really tried to come up with some other good ideas, and couldn't think of a one. What shots should have been done instead? I had searched on 1x, thinking they'd have some awesome ideas, but found nothing interesting, so I'd be interested in hearing what you think we missed.

I added a little color to a pretty good (IMHO) pet portrait to give it that something different look. It didn't work out so well.

However, the score didn't matter because I really wanted this shot. I have enough regular photos of Moe.

hmn. there weren't an awful lot of entries. and a horse, a Lusitano for heaven's sake, is hardly a pet.

I just checked prices, and at least by the pound, Lusitano doesn't seem to be any more valuable. ;)

Of course, they are from the right region, just need to feed them nothing but acorns. :D

My squirrels wouldn't approve of that.

I can just hear the conversation with the insurance adjustors and police detectives:

"Officer, I had NO IDEA that is was dangerous to put a power cord in water. The cuts in the insulation? Oh, my cat scratched it. Why did I take out such a large insurance policy a week ago on my husband? I know you will find this shocking, but I had a premonition that he would die early and leave me with just my birds and camera gear as friends. Just in case, I wanted to make sure that I could afford better lenses if I were left on my own."

I just want to know why Wendy's cat was worth a 1.6 higher score than my cat.

Casey the Cat is taking it pretty hard!

Its only my second entry ever into these challenges. I am very happy that my friends Pet Black Lusitano Stallion got me a yellow Ribbon :0)

I couldn't find any black misty seas with black rocks to photograph.
