I know there are many beautiful places in the White mountains to shoot...but I haven't been there since the 80's!

We are going to be in the Jackson, NH area...Any landscape or other good photo ops recommended in these locations?

Other fun things to do?

Also going to spend a couple of days in Ipswitch, MA. Happy to hear suggestions for there too!

I was up that way last September. Did a tour around the state.

The state has a lot of information regarding their covered bridges. I got some nice shots. Several of the old towns have rather significant meeting houses/churches. The cog railroad at Mount Washington was quite neat. A steam engine is used during the early morning trip - very impressive. You can also drive up the mountain. Temp. at the top was about 50 degrees lower than the base and windy. If the weather is cooperating you can get some fine shots of several mountain ranges. Cannon Mt. in the Franconia Notch is also worth a trip to the top, again nice views of mountain ranges. Nice scenery at the Flume also in Franconia Notch.

We stayed in Keene for a night. Some nice photo opportunities there and several covered bridges in the area. Mt. Monadnock is in the area, tough walk, travel light. We traveled up along the Connecticut River and visited what is called the Third Lake which is the source of the Connecticut River - right on the Canadian border. Unfortunately that's pretty far out of your way. If you like historic architecture it is all throughout many of the towns. Also there is a Shaker Village at Canterberry - very nice photo opportunities.

Going to keep a watch on this since I have a family reunion at The Jackson Estate. We will be there for a week. Even though I grew up in the area through the '60s, it's been awhile since I have been there and not really sure where to advise you to shoot.

We plan on being there in the middle of Oct 2013.

I'm WATCHING! :-)

From Jackson I'd suggest that you travel south on 16 til you reach 302 in Glenn. Head west until you reach the village of Bartlett then turn left on to Bear Notch Road. This will intersect with the Kancamagus Highway (not a Highway in the modern sense, instead a popular 34 mile scenic road that rises to almost 3000 feet). At the western end of "The Kanc" you'll find yourself in Lincoln NH. From Lincoln head north on I93 through Franconia Notch (Where the "Old Man" once perched on Canon Mt.). After Franconia Notch watch for signs leading to the villages of Twin Mountain and Bretton Woods. In the area of Twin Mountain you'll once again intersect with Rt 302 which will bring you to Bretton Woods (home of the famous Mt Washington Hotel) then it will loop back to Glen via Crawford Notch. Total Trip about 80-90 miles

There are countless photo opportunities along the way. Some of my favorites include:
Sabbaday Falls
Greely Ponds Trail
Lincoln Woods Train (Also known as the Wilderness Trail)
The Flume
The Basin
Old Man Historic Site
Mt Washington Hotel
Flume Cascade Falls
Silver Cascade Falls
etc.

Other things to do
- A fun trip from North Conway (just south of Jackson) is the Conway Scenic Railroad trip through Crawford Notch
- Already mentioned the auto road on the east side of Mt Washington (near Jackson) and the Cog Railway on the west side of the mountain (near Bretton Woods) are great trips to the highest peak in Northeast US.

I wish my car was working (it died last week). I live about an hour north of Jackson, NH. DJWoodward gave you some great spots. Just so you know...the Flume itself you have to pay to get into.

As for fun things to do... The White Mountains Attractions Pass This pass may sound expensive but it gives you two adult passes to all of the listed attractions.

Thanks!

This will be great info next time we're there--we already went and came back this past Sunday, the 25th.

I loved Jackson Falls--that was right near our B&B. We mostly hiked to falls (Arethusa, Sabbaday, Champney) and one view (Lowes Bald Spot) and took pics (well that's what I did). Also a drive and a short hike to Glen Ellis Falls and Silver Cascade.

Oh, and we took the Cog Train up Mt. Washington. That was very cool--we had great clouds that day and I took lots of pics on the way up and at the top...though it was mighty cold at the top that day.

And near our B&B there's a bog where a moose was known to be coming daily with her calf (?)...we managed to see her one day and get some pics, but the calf was not in sight.

Will post some later!

Thanks for all the tips...we loved it there, and will be back, so they will come in handy.
