I feel like a fly on the wall watching someone punch holes in bags.

This has become a crossover thread.

I thought DPL was supposed to encourage participation in DPC, but with this week’s topics Serpentine and Bad Hair Day, I expect there will be a lot of people who don’t take part. Absolutely ridiculous topics for any week but total nonsense in a DPL week.

I totally agree, come on, Bad Hair day.

We all have to live through the 1980-90's again.

Serpentine I can see, that is fairly hard to do. Bad hair day. Urgg

But then again, I am a bitchywhiny sourpuss tonight. Yeah, no, really, bad hair day. Come on.... .

Maybe PMS,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Meh. I'll take bad hair & snakes over contre jour.

I'll play a little devil's advocate. As much as challenge titles seem off-putting or inane, I am always surprised by the creativity and quality that shows up. (plastic faces excluded)

As far as participation, I'm fine with OTHER teams not participating in any given challenge. My team is aiming for 100% and my enforcer seems hellbent on not letting me forget that.

It's very challenging when the topics are "Absolutely ridiculous"
I like both of them. Makes people use their brains more often :)

I disagree, I think it will just push people away and not enter, which is the opposite of what DPL was aiming for

I bet you're wrong. Let's see...

Blue VI: 157
Inside: 123
Town or City Scape II: 131
Contre-Jour VI: 144

I'm gonna predict 125+ for Bad Hair and 140+ for Serpentine. Neither will be the highest, nor the lowest.

Wait a minute, salmiakki, are you just complaining because you hate snakes and have perfect hair? It's ok to admit to either one. :P

Ha ha, well I do have a snake phobia for sure.

I predict around 100 for bad hair and 120 tops for Serpentine.

lets have a raid the archive no date post your best pic challenge then theres no effort involved

New dpl challenge reads as if we need isolated objects, as if there can be no surrounding 'scene'.

The intention was to steer away from photographing colorful landscapes, basically. Photograph "stuff", not "scenery". Stuff in context shouldn't be a problem. Sorry if this is not clear :-( At this point it is what it is...

This is how I took it. A wide shot of a meadow full of colorful flowers would be DNMC for me, but those exact same flowers shot in a way that made me think of "colorful flowers" instead of "meadow of colorful flowers" wouldn't.

I think that is a better explanation than any lol

An object is "a material thing that can be seen and touched".

You can't touch a vista. You can't pick up light and move it down the street. You can only experience it.

Gonna just dropnthis right here and walk away (permanently at the end of DPL): When the SC spends years saying it’s up to the voters to decide what is and isn’t DNMC, and then puts a phrase like “NOT scenes” in a topic description with no yellow flag explaining WTF that means, encouraging voters to determine what may or may not be a scene versus figuring out for themselves whether or not a photo qualifies or not (as they are otherwise so want to do) the site deserves to die.

Yeah! The fact that a challenge description is occasionally vague, ambiguous or confusing out of the 2,600+ challenges conducted is inexcusable, unforgivable and warrants the death of the site.

You'd rather we flagged it and then determined to our own satisfaction, disregarding everyone else in DPC, exactly what a "scene" is? No thank you. That's absolutely untenable. We'd rather the shooters, AND the voters, decided on their own what might reasonably be construed as an object rather than a scene. In general, we believe this is the way to go. Not long ago, the site was suffering from over-regulation, and it got pretty frenetic, with barely a challenge going by where someone wasn't arguing that some attempt they had made to find a loophole in the rule or the flag was in fact a legitimate entry, and "intent of the challenge" be damned.

There's no way we can win that argument. We're not the world's arbiters of what is and what isn't, trained logicians used to threading needles in haystacks with unerring accuracy. What we DO have an issue with is folks that spout off negativism as if there's some sort of an absolute that DPC is somehow ignoring without (apparently) bothering to consider the very difficult position we SC, who after all are DPCers just like you, have voluntarily placed ourselves into.

Yeah, I'm a little disappointed. I'll get over it.

That's the same thing written two different ways.

Geez - wish I'd read this thread before submitting for 'Colorful Objects'. At least I can use it to influence my vote.
