Very interesting. A "Workers Paradise" indeed. :)

I especially liked this story on photo 16:

Then and now pictures of one of the tramways built in the 1960s. In 2008 the hauling rope of this tramway snapped with 12 passengers inside. Ramaz Khipshidze, the director of the Aerial Tramway Network says the automatic braking system worked "thanks to God." Chiatura didn't have the equipment needed to rescue the people inside. For 12 hours the passengers dangled above the town until a team from Tbilisi arrived with a rescue cabin. Although unwilling to specify amounts, Mr. Khipshidze says the passengers were paid compensation, and some accepted the company's offer of counseling.

How do you say "Suck it up, Buttercup!" in Russian? :P

Thanks for posting, Bear.

I think I like #20 best. Really nice photo.

Hell, you know I'm all up for risks, but, I think I'd prefer to simply strap a few soviet era rockets to my ass instead of going up in one of those. No brakes? That'd be a shitty way to spend your last minute or so of life.

Agreed. #20 should be captioned "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death..."

Wonderful, such textures and scenes (unless you have to use them every day). Thanks for sharing.

I had the same thought

Completely aside from the fact that I do agree with y'all, have the same stunned reactions to what we might call "the current reality" of this project, I have also another reaction: I'm STUNNED by the idea of a town in the mountains overlaid with a spiderweb of cables lofting citizens hither and yon, conceptually. Must've been a hell of a sight in its bustling heyday :-)

I agree

Funny how some images can trigger thoughts and images of some totally different environment.

I looked at these images and immediately started thinking about the "cage hoists" at the Creighton #9 mine shaft which went underground for more than a mile.

Looking back, I now understand why my father was so adamant that I should not work there and find myself a safe job... like a policeman. :O)
