...would someone, a baghead who later deleted their comment, who thought there was 'far too much red in this photo' suggest that I *improve* it by desaturating everything else except her eyes and hair?

So just for fun I did do as they suggested, of course I want to improve, no matter how ridiculous the suggestion...maybe they know something I don't.

But in this case that awful suggestion lead only to this grotesque mockery of a portrait and turned her into a horrific zombie child.

So where on earth did this trend for *dead baby/child/people* portraits* where only the hair and/or eyes is in colour and the rest is rendered in tones of grey? Don't get me wrong, I love b/w for portraits; I also love colour for portraits. But a horrid mashup of the two? Fer the love of all that is sacred, why?!

BTW the mom bought an 8x10 of this little girl. In full glorious colour.

I can only hope they didn't mean a 100% desaturation. My guess is that the commenter just isn't hip to the editing lingo yet? Desaturating at all would just give her that washed out "dead" look as you said. I haven't done any portrait shooting in a few years, but wouldn't you add a slight yellow filter to balance out the red (if there were excessive red)?

Also, for the record, gorgeous little gal.

I do think the color balance there is a bit off - are those whites a bit red? (check it with the eye dropper tool)

ETA: Looked again, and it seems that it's either color-cast from the jacket, or stained from washing it - the whites in the hat are fine.

Did you perhaps take a casual observation to a ridiculous extreme?

I don't know how the comment read, but maybe they simply meant that the red jacket took some impact away from her otherwise radiant red hair.

If I were to quibble about anything, I'd say the eyes look overworked and slightly unnatural.

Nine months of pent-up frustration over this and all you do is start a thread? Put some muscle into it!

Teehee...no I haven't been sitting here stewing over it...but I was uploading stuff to my already packed Workshop and stumbled across the desatted girl. Never knew who the baghead who left the comment was. Maybe this thread will flush them out and they'll fess up and explain themselves?

IMO phrasing your desire as you have is more likely to drive the commenter further underground -- I think politely requesting further explanation rather than demanding a defense would work better.

+1
I didn't comment on snaffles pic.
However, I do choose to be anonymous (i.e., baghead) when I do comment during voting.
Thus, I don't comment much anymore.

Getting back to the snaffle's question, I wouldn't have suggested desat. Out of the two, the all color is preferable. The desat version is scary/evil looking. FWIW.

Maybe they removed the comment because the realized what they said was not correct.

Partial desaturation is a sign of the devil.
