well, so here's another sad story and i figure the best place to share is on DPC.

anyway, monday night i had some friends over, they left around midnight. i enjoyed a nice glass of wine on my balcony and then accidently fell asleep on the couch, which is a few feet from the balcony door. BIG MISTAKE

basically while i was sleeping, thieves entered through the open door and quickly stole my MacBook Pro, canon 6d (with attached 50mm 1.4) and ipad 4. they luckily didn't get into the other room where my lenses and other things are, but either way that's about 5 to 6 thousand euro of stuff (my sweet computer was pretty slick)....

no i didn't have insurance, and i even had a harrowing 2 days of tracking both ipad and computer with Find my iPhone, to no avail. the precision of the gps signals wasn't enough to pinpoint a specific apartment, just a building, so the police couldn't get a warrant.

i consider myself lucky as they didn't smack me on the head and rob everything else in my house. i had luckily had a backup done that day so all my info and photos are safe, though currently inaccessable on a hard drive. my advice to anybody with anything worth value is pay some money now for insurance on anything of value. i do have my 550d still.... so i can still make photos though i can't do anything with them until i find a computer.

so that's my story! only people on DPC will understand the blow this makes on a photographer :(

So, you have friends, a balcony and the opportunity to drink good wine. Damn shame about the other stuff. Massive sympathy.

Not to sure about how big that glass was ?

Sorry about that Chris, you live and learn I guess.

That really sucks. Sorry. At least they didn't hurt you. (If that is any consolation)

Crap, that sucks.

So, do any of the people that were at your place the night living in the building where the gps said the things were located?
I guess it's fortunate that you didn't wake up and escalate the situations while the thieves were there. At least you are still here and in one piece.
That's good advice about insuring the gear.

Damn Chris, that's horrible. Thankfully it's things that you can eventually replace and not any injury to you.

Thank goodness you weren't hurt!

I wonder if the gps shows anything different now. The equipment certainly could have moved to a different spot that more locatable...

Well, HECK! Heck-FIRE! You have my sympathy...

Yikes. That's awful! I'd probably have a mild heart attack if that happened. What a shame! But who knows, maybe you'll be able to locate the items at some point.. If there are any pawn shops near the area where you live, keep an eye on them and see if any of your gear appears there... I don't know how it is in your side of the world, but here in America, people have to give an ID in order to pawn things so if any of your items was at one, they'd be able to track the person who gave it up.

Anyway, good luck to you. We all feel your sadness :(

So sorry, Chris - but counting your blessings as you are, most importantly that you were not harmed.

Hey folks, thanks for the well wishes. Like I said it was only stuff, but coincidentally at the end of the month I was going to make the jump and go full time photog, so this presents a small speedbump! Anyway, as for GPS the iPad is traceable through its IMEI address, but it'll take time and several warrants to get it back; the rest is gone for sure. I'm keeping an eye on the normal sites for buy/sell but really here in Italy there is an incredibly large network of theft - I'm sure it's already in Naples in a pawn shop somewhere. The biggest and most annoying thing is now I'm all paranoid about closing everything all the time. As I suppose I should be, but still in th summer it's nice to keep windows open, no?

So sorry you have had this happen Chris. VERY glad that you were not a casualty yourself. I really hope you eventually get your stuff back, though.

Sorry to hear this Chris, you must be out of your mind with RAGE.
I would want to hurt someone real bad.

I would die if someone stole my camera and its just a baby D60.. that is like my baby blanket and it comes everywhere with me..
So sorry to have heard of this. I am glad you are safe and sound.

Too bad cameras do not have GPS like phones do..

OH!!!

Chris that is really bad news!!!

Please get insurance it's well worth it like you said.

We got broken into whilst we were away, they stole a bit of money not much really, did a good job of wrecking our window though which will cost a bit to fix, but insurance will pay for most of it :)

Glad you're ok though!

ARRRGH! That SUCKS, Chris! You're taking it a lot better than I would.

I can only hope karma beats the living shit out of the thieves. Glad you were unharmed, though. You will recover. I wish you all the best, man. I'm sending you positive thoughts & prayers and sending the thieves curses and voodoo hexes.

Thanks again for the support people! I've decided to jump in head first anyway and so from July 1st my resume will say photog instead of cook!

Don't think Karma does lynchings - wrote 'living shit' in their DNA a while back...

That is really horrible news, Chris. I can't imagine the terrible lingering feeling your space has been violated. Thank god you were not hurt, and you will rebound from this. Best of luck on the start of your new career. With your talent you should do well.
