I've been asked to improve this photo for a friend of mine. I would love to get some alternative suggestions other than my usual stuff...

I really don't know too much, but I added a little bit of contrast, and some structure/sharpening.
I assumed you didn't want to go black and white, and wanted to remain true to the subject.

Looks a bit static - you could try and make the hands look like they are in motion by duplicating the hands and adding some motion blur to the duplicate. This is only an idea in my head - not sure how it would look. The idea is to make the image feel like the person is playing the drum and not just resting their hands on it.

I processed this through the DxO Optics Pro RAW engine (as a JPG), added some texture, and then did some soft contrast in Color Efex Pro...

When I saw the colors in this I thought it would look great as a b&w so here's my take:

Oh, thanks guys, didn't mean to post then leave, but stuff happens...

I like the ideas so far... gives me some ideas, but here is an e-mail I got from him since I posted...

i was wondering, to put it on a CD or eventually be part of a poster, what can i do without looking to crazy to bring out the colors more, even if it gets a bit Wild…
otherwise its just a couple of hands playing drums, kinda to attract attention… just wondering.

It is a bit static. Paul, I'll try the motion in the hands, cool idea, but not sure I can pull it off. I wish I could do a re-shoot, but he lives WAY too far away. I'm just tickled he's letting me play with this and want to do an awesome job... :D, especially if he uses it on his CD!

I ll go for a warmer image and a vignetting so the hands will pop up

Edit to reveal additional textures - the original is a little flat and one dimensional.

Create a high structured B&W using Nik Silver Efex Pro 2

Use the B&W image with a Luminosity blend mode to add texture to the color image. Ctrl-E to flatten.

Add a mild vignette around the hands to focus attention there
- Use Elliptical Marque tool to make selection around hands
- Right-click in selection, choose Feather, and set appropriately (about 350 for full sized image, 60 for this reduced size one)
- Invert selection and press Ctrl/Cmd-J to create a new layer
- Change blend mode to Multiply and adjust Opacity until you like it
- Ctrl/Cmd-E to combine layers.

You can certainly then play with additional filters to bring back some of the color lost with the blend of the B&W.

He TOLD me to push it to the max and I gave him this.

He told my to go wild without going crazy. How am I supposed to do that?!

LOL

So he replied that I shouldn't edit on LSD... :\

I haven't re-visited it yet, because we got to talking about something else, but thanks for mentioning, I'm going to try again...

The problem I'm having is keeping the hands real and making making everything brighter without turning it orange, like this one. Here is what he said again...

"...what can i do without looking to crazy to bring out the colors more, even if it gets a bit Wild..."

This is just a favor, so not stressing over it. It's just become a challenge...

I'm going to try your direction first, I really appreciate all the input!

Followed what you did, and I do like it!

Maybe I should just go for a cool bright Latin-ish border to bring out the colors?

Tell him next time if he wants textures to not shoot in such flat light, and to get the light source at an angle to the lens.

Topaz Adjust to add texture.
New layer and masked out everything but the hands
Puppet Warp a couple of layers to add motion in hands.

Buy membership so I can post photo!
(Was probably about time after being Registered Member for so long)

What improvements is your friend interested in … or asked another way, what flaws have you been asked to address?
