I finally thought I had a picture that would score really well in the Free Study. And l woke up this morning and remembered I was supposed to upload it last night. :( I always land in the middle to lower part of these contests, and I probably would have had a personal best. But, I got nothing. Do you think it would have done well?

I also took this one that day, and it turned out pretty cool, although I wouldn't have entered it.

Well from what I've seen recently, DPCers just LOVE the Golden Gate bridge in full colour.

I know yours isn't the GG, but I think it's a nice clean shot, not cluttered, good use of bw with lots of gray scale, leading lines etc. I would probably give this a 6-7 in voting.

I'll be happy to look at your outtake after the voting phase is over, but not before.

That's why he started this thread, it's not entered. You're safe.

Exactly. I WISH this was an outtake, and an even better shot was in the challenge!

It's still an outtake even if he didn't enter the challenge. The purpose of the outtake rule is to keep from muddying the waters during voting with opinions on images that might resemble actual entries. I will remove the images for now. Pixlmaker is welcome to put them back up after the voting is done.

Wait, what?? I DO NOT HAVE ANY PICTURES IN A CHALLENGE RIGHT NOW. Good grief, doesn't anybody actually read what is written on the forums??

It doesn't matter. It's still muddying the waters by asking people to give their opinion and tell how they WOULD have voted. There may be images similar to yours actually entered, and discussion of your images could influence voters. You are welcome to post your images for feedback after the challenge ends. This is the way we've always done it.

Um, okay. Sorry I asked for an opinion. Obviously nobody comments on squat around here any more, so why even bother? So basically, no one can post a picture on this forum while a contest is going on. Since contests are ALWAYS going on, I guess asking about ANY picture is "muddying the waters". Okay then.

You can post your pictures all you want. What you can't do is ask people how they would have scored them in a currently-running challenge? Is that so unreasonable?
08/01/2014 07:59:29 PM · #11
Okay, I honestly had no idea that would be even remotely a problem. But hey, your rules are your rules.
08/01/2014 08:04:16 PM · #12
I will also mark it for for comment after voting, but the rule is one that evolved over time, because all sorts of stuff got stirred up during challenges that people felt may or may not have been intended to sway voting. While a free study is a harder challenge to see how it could impact the voting, Robert did not invent the rule.

I'll be happy to critique your image after the current challenge voting phase is over. Until then, my higher priority is to vote and comment on images currently in competition. Man, if you want votes or comments, your faster route is to enter challenges. I didn't make this rule, but it's been that way as long as I can remember.

Patience, Grasshopper. The rules are there to prevent undue influence (or even the appearance of such) during voting. Voting is over in seven days (nearly always), and the burning question can wait that long, even if I wouldn't want to wait either...
(How's that for an obscure reference - Patience, Grasshopper? From the US TV show Kung Fu which ran from 1972 - 75. Why, that was before some of you were even born! Worse, before even some of your parents were born! Scary when you get old. Don't do that!)

Hah! I recognized the reference immediately but I did wonder how many would miss it. At least you have some 'old' company here.

Likewise ... in fact I've been looking (not too hard though) for a video/DVD of the show ...

I'd agree (and have always agreed) with that for topic based challenges. Not sure how/why it applies to a free study. He could just simply post it in the forums without reference to a challenge and ask for feedback. Not sure what the big deal is.

If he'd done that nothing would have happened. But it was inappropriate to ask specifically "How would you guys have scored this if I'd entered it in the current challenge?", regardless of what the topic of that challenge is.

This makes me wonder, how do new DPChallenge users find out about rules such as the Forum Rules?

I checked the Terms of Use that I think everyone has to read when signing up, but didn't see anything in there about the forum rules, only challenge rules. ???

Well, it's worth noting that there's no PENALTY involved here or anything. And he's been informed now, right? Personally, *I* read the forum rules of any site I hook up with, but maybe that's just me...

*I* read them too. :-) ... now, about trying to find them - that's another story. :-D

Free Study is over, so I re-added the pictures to my original post.

It's a real nice image, would have given it 6 or 7 and my guess is it would have scored something like 6.1795. Maybe take this image again, work on the halos around the bridge and enter it for Vanishing Point III ;-)

The halos would drop the score some. There is a great tutorial here on fixing that problem.
