In line with this thread, how about we try food in black and white?

I'd like to see it in Basic (or Advanced if people really whine...), and I don't think we need a description of the challenge. If one insisted on a description, it might be something like, "Make food look appetizing in black and white."

Try it as a side challenge.. see what happens.

Just to put it "on record", I will be voting on "Food in Black and White" as "food" in "black and white".

And... black and white to me means...

Black

And...

White.

And any tone in between.

Any other color that is not black or white or a tone of black or white... is not "in Black and White" to me. (Monochrome images and Duotone images are totally different than Black and White images, in my humble... and perhaps igorant... opinion.)

To each his own though... Vote as you like. :D

Also, the image will need to feature food to score highly from me. Just sayin'... *grin*

Tones in between? DNMC!
I'll have a color picker tool on standby, any tone in an entry other than pure black or pure white will result in a vote of 0.

;)

The lowest you can go is 1.

So, if I read between the lines, what you're saying is that the image needs to be a food item...in black and white?

Hope the challenge title makes that clear ;)

I believe it is not at all about the actual color of the food being photographed, but the color (or rather total lack of color) of the image submitted. Lydia likes purity in her black & white challenge entries -- not just monotones, but clean blacks, whites and grays. Don't be giving her no sepias or other toned shots. While I may hold a more liberal view of what would qualify to me as a black & white, I appreciate her interpretation and that she is letting people know there may be consequences in the voting.

I will be sure to leave a frivolous comment on anyones image that does no have pure 0 or 255 values only...

Not that it really matters to anyone, but as an exercise of support...I definitely lean Lydia's way on this issue. I've never given a 1 or 2 to anyone because I consider that somewhat insulting for virtually every photographer on this site, but I will drop a 3 on a dnmc shot.

There are plenty of opportunities in other challenges to enter sepia, selective color, etc. if you have a burning desire to express yourself that way without doing so in a "black and white" challenge. I realize that I'm somewhat of a "strict constructionist" but someone has to do it. May as well as be me. Of course, I prefer to call it "old school" but its all just semantics.

So, Lydia, you are not alone.

PS: I can't make a decent "black and white" photo to save my life, and probably won't this time either.

Wow! Selenium toning for me. Because it enhances the perception of blacker blacks. But, I'm just commenting...

Possibly because you DON'T tone them. Every B/W I make that LOOKS neutral is actually selenium-toned. It seems to make the blacks much richer, visually, as Richard pointed out.

Could be, Bear. I know my black and whites are nothing to write home about.

What method do you use for the 'selenium' toning?

Is it similar to this?
