Kind of as expected. This is probably a higher score than it deserves.

More than happy with 5.5 after 15 votes
I had totally no idea how mine would score.
I don't feel comfortable with b&w pictures.
Still a lot to learn.

The ones with color in them really stand out as not being Black and White when seen in the group of thumbnails all on one page... ;)

Perhaps, but that's not how you view them while voting ;)

so most of Civil War photography was in color? Your view of photography and history is truly remarkable.

Anyway, here's my pure black and white score:

Black and White... and then Sepia. Sepia is... well... sepia ('cause it added a color and they had to come up with a new name for it, since it wasn't black and white).

Thanks! I've always like it. ;)

My first comment is making me question the accuracy of the colors on my monitor - to me, the toning looked subtle and worked a lot better for the subject matter than the pure B&W version.

I'm using a 17 inch MBP to edit, but I also looked at it on my iPhone, an old HP CRT with no calibration, and my two un-calibrated LCD's at work. Looked about the same, but on the 22 inch LCD at work none of the 800x photos look nearly as sharp as on my laptop. Must be the resolution - 1920x1200 on 17 inches vs. 1920x1080 on 22 inches.
Then I checked on my wife's 13 inch retina display MBP - the toning comes out a lot more saturated on that one, but it's scaled well (resolution is 2560x1440 I think) and keeps the sharpness.

Sitting at 5.7778 right now, not too bad but I probably should have used the pure B&W even though it didn't look as good for the subjects on my monitor.

No, Sepia has always been sepia. It's the Latinized form of the Greek word for "cuttlefish": the reddish brown pigment is derived from the ink sacs of cuttlefish. It was a common writing and drawing ink for many centuries. Why did they start toning B/W prints with it (or with selenium, for that matter)? Because both treatments of the print enhanced its permanence, a real problem with early photographic materials, silver halides being notoriously unstable in bright light.

In my places the cuttlefish ink is black so I am safe cause my sepia treatment is blackish :)

The marks on the monitor are a bit fishy stinky but will fade
