Thanks for the info. Looking forward to see the first challenge entries with the larger size. |

All my crappy OOF, slightly motion blurred pics will look like the garbage they are now. I may have to learn how to actually operate my camera now. |

What will this do to our portfolio space? Do the challenge entries count against that? |
Challenge entries do NOT count against your Portfolio allocation. Neither do DPC Prints images -- the (hopefully small) "placeholder" image counts, but the separate (hopefully a lot larger) print file will not. |

LOL
I might have to do the same, I decided to submit another 10 shots for stock sales since it's been years and all 10 got rejected for various reasons although a lot of it is probably subject matter and processing since I tried to bring up detail the shadows like I do for challenges. |

You know, you are required to submit larger images ... |

On a 4x5 print or on a billboard? You can probably get a decent print 8-12" (@100-150dpi). |

I entered the C2K challenge. For a full size image (no cropping) with 1200 being the width, I still have to scroll a little vertically on my laptop. Even in full screen mode. Maybe the "fitting an image to screen size" is only during voting?
That said, I am impressed with the difference in quality. Amazing detail that was not possible before. I'm looking forward to voting! |

I think that's correct. But there may be bugs that have to be worked out. I'd certainly hope portfolio images would resize too, eventually. |

Possibly from some, but they don't show during voting anyway |

Personally, not speaking for anyone else of course, but if someone wants to print a 4x6 or a pixelated 8x12 from one of my challenge entries and tack it on their wall I don't give a damn.
It's a hobby for me now and a creative outlet, so if people enjoy what I've created that's OK because I'm not offering them for sale anyway. |

Not complaining, but I just tried 1200px at my own site. Looks I've have some work to do, some rescaling I think. The image fits on a 1280x1024 screen, but there's no room for any header or footer. |

Bear in mind that you don't HAVE to enter a 1200px image. Your entry could be 1100px or 1000px if that works better for you. |

I think I will enter at 999 px... because that is what I normally say when looking at my scores! |

Actually, the parenthetical that I see in the instructions does not include the word "posted." Cut and paste: "(no more than 800 pixels for challenges prior to October 22nd, 2014)." And something similar for file size (bold added).
I had assumed that "prior to" indicated challenges in which submissions all entries had to be completed prior to October 22. Adding the word "posted" would be a step in the right direction, but would still leave the matter somewhat ambiguous for anyone not following this thread. I'd suggest making it explicit, maybe: "(no more than 800 pixels for challenges with a submission date range that includes any dates earlier than October 22nd, 2014)." Or maybe just "any challenge posted earlier than the C2K -- DPC's 2,000th Challenge" to make it easier to grasp.
Maybe not crucial since the auto-resize function sounds like it would prevent blocking submissions in the new size, but that could come as a surprise to some. After reading many threads picking on rule details, clarity up front might be worthwhile. Especially if you get a better wordsmith than me. |

I have no children. May I have an ice-cream cone instead? |

BTW, here's the difference between 800 and 1200:
Isn't that amazing? For a landscape photographer, the significant improvement is that, with the 800px image, the image had to be "crunchy" to preserve a semblance of detail: at 1200px, it can be sweet and smooth... |

Do they look different when you view them on a small monitor? |

I guess I can't be as sloppy when editing now. :) |

The new size of the image looks so dandy when submitted so much more detail in it
Thanks Langdon and SC

Well, they are PROCESSED differently, so yes, there are slight variations. On the 800-pixel image I used more sharpening, so the 1200-pixel one looks a little softer when viewed at 800... However, when comparing the resized image to the original 1200-pixel version, they seem the same to me, at least when allowing for less detail at the smaller size.
Certainly, I'm satisfied with the quality of the resizing. |
