I've been contacted by a mining company to come to their mine and take photos of it for their publications, press releases etc, I'd fly there on Friday, shoot Saturday and Sunday and fly home Monday. I do not need to spend 12 hours a day on site as long as I get the shot list done, I do need to buy my own Personal Protective equipment, how much do you reckon I should charge. Flights, food and accommodation are provided.

Thanks
Dave Alderson

Ha. The mining industry in Australia and particularly in my neck of the woods in Central Queensland and the Bowen Basin is undergoing a gigantic downturn at the moment, with quite literally thousands of people out of work, being made redundant, being encouraged to take small amounts of leave without pay in order to save their jobs in the long term, etc, etc. The effects are ongoing, far reaching and nowhere near over. There are hundreds of vacant houses, which in turn leaves some people with double (or triple) mortgages and no way to pay them. The real estate market has crashed, so selling is not an option (good market for buyers!) As if town populations weren't suffering enough with FIFO and DIDO before, now it is much, much worse as entire families are leaving as there is no main income earner any more and the cost of living is unsustainable on a drastically smaller, single income.

I've lived in this area for well over 20 years, have a variety of work and life experience in a couple of the major industry sectors here, including mining, and I've not seen it worse.

The money, my friends, ain't there. I'm pretty impressed that any mine is still willing to pay for this, as it would be seen as yet another unnecessary expense.

Whilst there has been quite a downturn in the mining industry that definitely has had an effect on the surrounding residents there is still work available in photographing minesites. I know this first hand.
