I have been asked to show off some of my best eagle pictures that I have taken for a local travel guide in a magazine and perhaps one of them they wish to have it be the cover of this magazine.

It came from a facebook friend who works at his company and in the mean time they do these guides for seasonal, fall, spring, winter and summer. They have seen my summer photos with the fireworks and the ferris wheel together and fell in love with those for some odd reason LOL

At the moment it is a huge, huge honor to even be asked to have these pictures be in.. my other side is really aprehensive at the moment and not sure what to think about it.

The photos they need really needs processing work more and I am not really, really sure if they are "magazine" material.

I am also not sure on how they will do the copyright realeases or if it is even going to be compensated.
The exposure in itself will be just amazing.

I know nothing about ratios of what they need or even if they want my original RAW files, I am kinda aprehensive about passing them over, it was a thought I had.
They also want to use some of my river nature pictures I have taken as well.

I am waiting for the specs and more details from the person who is in charge of the photos so in the mean time I have all these things running through my mind LOL!

Kinda exciting at the same time, but no matter what way this goes, I was pretty happy that they have even considered my photos in the first place. Not sure what to expect, ask or do before giving them permission to even use my photos in the first place..

I do wish to make sure I have my copyrights protected most of all.

first, congrats on being recognized! always nice!

as to your copyright, that was fixed at the moment you pressed the shutter. in the US, you own the copyright until you transfer it in writing to someone else (unless, of course you are shooting under a contract that controls the copyright ownership).

so, in this instance, you will be licensing the publisher use of the image. the license can be as broad or as narrow as you like. typically, you would license it to them for a one-time use and make sure they understand that they cannot sell prints or re-license the image to anyone else.

as to the specs, don't worry about it. they will tell you what they need. they do not necessarily need the raw file; most likely a 300dpi 10" jpg should suffice. leave the post-processing up to them, unless you want/need to do slight adjustments for WB and/or exposure. no sharpening!

before you simply just give it away, though, do ask them what their normal compensation is for this type of use. for a cover of a travel guide, especially one where they are either selling the guide or have sold advertising inside the guide, they should be able to pay. normally, covers images range from $250 to $1000, depending on the number published. even though this is not your livelihood, you owe it to yourself and other working professionals to at least ask.

hope this helps and that everything works out for you!

LOL! Too funny!

Thanks Skip! That does help, I had no clue on how to go about doing this. I know I just did not want to "give" away my photos but having something that I can still control means something to me.

So far, I have sent sample photos with a clear water mark across the photos that way they could not just download and use them.
