The Guess Your Score challenge is currently in voting with only a few days left! With aid from NiallOTuama, we'll be issuing ribbons to folks who guess the closest (on average) to the final scores.

Since the goal for this challenge is to generate more (quality!) comments, comments containing only a number will not be included in our tally.

Also, even if you're not a member (this guy: ), you can still comment on entries and leave your guess.

We're going to try and automate the tallying as best we can, so if you want to make sure your guess counts, please leave at least a few helpful words behind for the photographer along with a numeric score at the end.

For example:

Sounds great. Can you explain how the ribbons work if you know yet. If someone comments on only one image and guesses the final score perfectly but someone else comments on 74 images and gets 73 perfectly correct and one slightly out then who is more likely to get a special ribbon?

I just sent this message in a pm to everyone who had previously commented on my entry but had not included a number. I am assuming these people had commented more than once, so they would not be able to associate my message with my entry. Thought I'd post this here so others could do the same - I'd hate for someone who had gone to the trouble of leaving a lot of comments early to be out of the running for this fun special ribbon because of the omission of the number. If this is inappropriate in any way, let me know. I can't take back the few pm's I just sent, but I can edit this post.

You need to go back and add a number to your comments in this challenge. See the special ribbon announcement and explanation. And thanks for commenting!

At the end description says "Voters should comment if they disagree with the photographer's guess.
"
So if I didn't comment that means I agree, so their guess is my guess.

Does that count in my favor?

I'm re-thinking. Seems to me you could score an image with one number and leave another number in the comment and that would work fine. So . . . I might give an image a 3 but guess that dpc voters will give it a 7. My "7" should count for the special ribbon IMO Will this be too confusing? I would definitely make automating the tallying more complicated. Like if there was only one number (assume guess and score are the same), no problem. But if there are two numbers, the comment has to be flagged somehow and looked at by a real person . . .

eta
Still re-thinking. If the numbers aren't the same, what if I write out what I gave the entry but use a numeral for the guess score? Like this.
"I really don't like stuff I don't understand so I gave you a three - DPC voters will probably give you a 6"
of course the end could be shortened - just so there is only one numeral in the comment.

Or I don't even have to say what score I gave - I can just say something like "voters will give a 6 but I adore this so my vote is higher".

That is what I did, if I agreed, I did not make comment

My original comment included my vote BUT my guess what what I think the end result will be.
I'm trying to guess how everyone else will vote it.
So in the end all those who didn't understand the rules will believe I gave them low votes and think I'm a troll.

Hey SC people.

Your stunned silence is very reassuring. :)

I'm sure they are on it, Don :) I can picture them scurrying around in cyberspace trying to get a consensus on how to handle this. We always complicate things, don't we :)

I donno about the REST of us, but I was up until 5 AM so I just woke up for the day and I'm doing my rounds.

As for our involvement in this, it's nil :-) This is all between Langdon and Niall. I'm also curious how we're gonna handle the situation where someone comments/guesses on only a handful versus someone who does them all, as has been mentioned earlier. But it's no big deal, since it's just an added little game on the side, right? :-)

I think your thinking is good, Bear. It's just a little something extra on the side to make the commenting more fun. However they sort it out is no problem for me.

If it's easier to handle if people comment on all the images, I'm game.
We have 3 days to make 74 comments.

Has thought gone into the automatic tallying if there are two numbers in the comment?

For example: I love this shot and gave it a 10. But I think the final score will be 3.42.

That's why I suggested writing out the word for what you gave it and using the numeral for your prediction.

Good idea, I'll go back and change all the comments I already did.

I have langdon on google talk and figured I'd quickly check whether it was possible before bothering you guys. And it sort of just went from there.

Right, no worries. It's good to see initiative rewarded with action, wherever it comes from. It's a great idea and I'm glad you suggested it.

I was wondering why commenting spiked today. Lol
02/03/2015 05:48:26 PM · #22
Comments Made in the challenge so far: 558

Impressive! Before the announcement there were 350 commenrs (I checked because I thought it might affect the count). Nice work folks! The ribbons are being earned!

well I've done my best with a comment and a guess but you never know how close you are as the makers never let on !!!!!

Yes, as nam suggested, if there are two numbers, it will be flagged to intervention.

I've also updated the challenge description for voters: Voters should vote as normal, but in the comments include a guess of their own.

That's my mistake, I thought that was originally included in the description. If there's enough interest, we can extend the voting/commenting deadline by as much as a week.

I'd have tried harder to enter, and I assume many more would have too, if the "special ribbons" had been announced BEFORE the challenge was in voting.

Seems like a great way to entice entries... offering them during entry time... AND people would be more interested in actually predicting their entry's score rather than making a play for sympathy by under estimating their own... :D

I liked seeing everyone's guesses. Fun stuff.
