I took this shot for the Ansel Adams challenge...

It's an Infrared shot taken on a cool, damp morning just after the fog lifted. I liked it immediately, but never thought a whole lot of it (it finished 6th). Regardless, I stuck it on my Flickr account and tagged it appropropriately (nothing too outrageous: infrared, water, trees, reflection, B&W, black and white). I cannot understate the importance of tagging if you want people to find your stuff. Why? Because people look for pictures, and someone was looking for something and found it here and contacted me. The person was from a large European retailer who wanted to license the image exclusively worldwide for prints. Given that I work with a gallery here in the US we came to an agreement for exclusive rights outside the US. This is the 3rd Flickr image in a year that I've licensed for hard, cold cash with no effort other than tagging my shots.

I chuckle a little because one of my comments during the voting was a one word, "Yawn", which I actually understood because it's truly a wallpaper image with not a whole lot of deep, artistic merit. So, with that said, I think it found its market as mass produced artwork to be hung as canvas prints in first apartments, dormitories and low rent flats all over Europe. LOL It goes into the next.co.uk catalog in August, so you've got 2 years to snap one up. I'd already printed one for a guest room here, but I managed to negotiate a copy for myself on canvas.

My favorite part of this exercise was that my wife, who has been ignoring my requests over the last 6 months to review my Flickr account and let me know what she'd like printed for the house, seems to have finally found "merit" in my work and has given me a list of a dozen shots that I need to print, frame and hang ... but only after I paint the 5 rooms she wants to hang them in. LOL

All I can say is that Benjamin Moore's Barren Plain is a really nice color, and goes well with Stone Harbor. For trim I'd splash out for the Satin Impervo. Gives a really nice sheen without being overly glossy. Good tip is to get your primer tinted — and don't be fooled by marketing tricks: use primer — to the finishing color, so you're working toward your finished color and you'll get there sooner. If you've got to take a break, wrap your roller or brush in a plastic bag and stick it in the fridge. It won't dry out as quickly, so you can run for more beer.

Sorry, I think this was a photography-related thread, but I'm unable to comment on that, as I've been spending my time elsewhere.

That is fabulous and so wonderful, what a new excitement for you Jake!

That is funny about the painting, you better jump on that.

Love the advise about the tagging because I never do on my photos at all, and I totally forgot about my flickr account, I stopped using it, but it was one of the first sites I signed up too.

Thanks Jake. I hadn't been adding photos to Flickr much but you have inspired me to update it now so get ready to see a lot of sheep photos

Thanks, all. It's always nice just to know that someone likes a particular shot, but to have someone reach out and pay to use it, well, it's certainly better than finding out they stole it. LOL

And yes, Paul, I'm seeing lots of sheep. :)

That is so awesome! Congratulations! My only "luck" in people finding my photos is that they steal them and use them without permission *sigh*. I love hearing wonderful stories like this one!

Awesome!!! So when I see it on the walls of all the LaQuinta's we stay I. I can proudly say I knew him when he was merely mortal!

Funny thing, I had the same thing happen to me. Ended painting the whole house and there still aren't any of my photos on the wall.

It's a ruse I tell ya. :O)

Well, I just learned that a friend's gallery, where I've had shots hanging for the last year, is closing their doors for a while, so it looks like I've got 3 shots coming home that need a spot on the wall or in the closet, so I'll at least get 3 up without having to paint. LOL

It is a ruse.

Just wanted to say it's official, my print is now available on the Next.co website...

As I told my brother, I've officially cheapened his profession.
