It seems like a really basic question, but I have never been to a photography get together. Is there anything more than a couple of photographers picking a time and place and shooting images together? Do you have a planned topic or set equipment list? Do things just come together on the fly or is there any leadership or planning involved?

A group of photographers in my area are interested in meeting up, but nobody has done it before, so before I step up to organize it I thought I would ask all the wonderful experienced people at DPC what works and what doesn't regarding meet ups?

Generally, the organizer will plan for everyone to meet at a photogenic location. I've organized or participated in meetups everywhere from downtown Dallas to an automotive junkyard.

Usually the group wanders a bit, everyone looking for what interests them, agreeing to regroup later on at a specified place and time. It's always fun to see how different people can photograph the exact same subject at the same time and often come away with totally different photos.

When I arranged a North Texas DPC meetup a few years back, we met for breakfast at a Denny's, which gave an opportunity to get to know anyone we had not met in person before. Then we spent a few hours at an airshow (which I almost had to be dragged away from) and got lunch before heading to DeRidder antiques, a place chock full of interesting and unusual objects. I combined it with the monthly meetup for the local Flickr meetup group, so not everyone in the photos is a DPC member.

The second day, we went to the Modern Art Museum and then the Fort Worth Stockyards. (This was a two day meetup)

What Steve said. The organizer comes up with a time and place, and everyone brings whatever equipment they want.

I found that a photowalk with a group is a very refreshing and reassuring way to find out that we all have our unique way of viewing (and shooting) the exact same things. Make sure to include a relaxed place where you can all sit and eat/drink afterwards to compare your images.

Thanks Johanna and Steve for your input. I think I can pull together something, since the folks that are interested don't seem to be stepping up to the plate!
