Following a comment in another thread about "low votes" in relation to a little friendly competition, I had a look at the data to see if there was any truth to the anecdotal/perceived drop in scores.

In the process I was able to put to bed any claims that 20 people having a bit of fun had any impact on the scores.

The data told a larger story though, and I thought I'd share the graphs with you all... have a look at DPC "big data"

Note: The black trend lines are 50 data point moving averages, the green bars behind the top plot relate to the dates (as best I could find) associated with competitions like DPL, WPL, TPL or DPCO.

You'll notice that while there's been a downward trend in participation (voting, entries, comments), scores have been trending upward over the life of DPC.

Or

"How dare you dispute that my photo wasn't really worth a 9 and yet it got a 5.5 because of X (weather, corruption, etc etc) "

way to use a varying vertical scale to introduce bias.

Really?! What bias have I introduced? Would you like me to normalise the data to a mean value and show them as ratios... then you'd accuse me of something else.

All these show are the trends. And given each plot is showing something different i.e. scores, entries, votes, comments, the y-axis mus be different scales to show the trend within that data set.

relax it was a joke. if you used consistent vertical scale and all stating at 0, the participation trends would look like nose dives !

Thanks for this, Vlado.
I keep saying that we are losing voters. Glad to have that confirmed. Now what do we do about it?
Also, I wonder if the lower # of votes overall is related to the increase in score given.

What does the #votes/#entries ratio look like?

how do you mine the site for this data?

I'll have a look when I get on the computer with the data... don't have it on my smartphone.

This data is available via the Challenge History. I hit "show all" copied the table into a text file, cleaned it up a little with a couple of macros, and copied it into Excel.

While the average might still be the same -- I'm curious about the st. dev/range type things. It seems like the high end is much much much lower than it was and is continuing to go down. Top tens with 5.x were extremely rare in the beginning, and seem to be happening much more. We still have 7.x winners, but it seems like there's a lot more 6s and even low 6s.

How have the high scores changed over time?

Perhaps. I vote pretty much every image in every challenge. My perception is that, in general, the number of strikingly good images is lower than it has been in a very long time. Two reasons for this:
1.) Less entries overall means less top-notch images.
2.) Accomplished photogs move on, and newer members are naturally not as accomplished at hitting the DPC voter right between the eyes.

funny i look back at the old images and i'm more often wowed with newer entries, the old stuff doesn't do much for me and I'm surprised some ranked so high. Of course my standards are probably much higher today than when this site was in its infancy being that i see jaw dropping photos on the net daily.

Free Study XII

678 entries. 140th place with a score of 6.0611 had 21 comments - 18 of those during voting.

This was in 2006. WAY more entries, WAY more commenting. No cash prizes. Didn't even get stars for 4th or 5th, or 6th through 10th.

I, for one, have always wished that on each challenge entry we could see the photographer's wishes re comments.

Choices such as:

1) Please vote and COMMENT on my entry. I am happy with any sort of criticism, don't hold back at all.
2) Please vote and comment, but only if it is positive. I am fragile and will get very cranky with you if you have something negative to say.
3) Vote, but don't bother with a comment, thanks.
4) Go away.

I would be much more likely to comment if I knew it was wanted and welcome.

Some worrying trends when one looks at new user registrations, and when most of the current members registered.
