So, I've always wanted to try this but I have the FujiFilm Instax 210 and I've always just wanted to go to like big tourist places and just charge people a couple bucks and take photos for them.

But I have legal questions. I live in Dearborn, MI. Say I go to Detroit Zoo and start doing this, can I get in trouble? And if so, what could they do to me? If it's totally legal cool but if not is it worth it? Also, where are some places I could go to do this at? Any ideas?

Will it even sell? If you and your're family were at an attraction and you saw someone doing this, would you pay for a photo?

There are numerous services that offer just such services - this is one of many: //www.flytographer.com/

Your biggest obstacle is not legal (a signed release and/or contract should cover that, assuming the location allows photography), but publicity.

I was thinking more old school though. You know, just going to the zoo one day with a sign or make myself a shirt that says INSTANT PHOTOS! and charge per photo. Like a door to door salesman but in a public place/tourist destination.

I could introduce myself to people and be like. "Do you want an instant photo? Just $2! Stand right over there with your lovely wife so I can get the giraffe in the photo."

Would you be printing them out? Or just texting them? Would you be processing at all?

I'd still get them to sign a release (there are digital ones they can sign on your phone screen).

No, I have an instant polaroid camera from FujiFilm. So I would take the picture, it would print out of my camera and I would give it to them. Would a release not be needed then? And, do you think that would sell?

Hmmmm, probably wouldn't need a release, but you never know...

Would it sell? Won't know until you try :) But you'll have to factor in the cost of the film, admission fee (if there is one), time, gas, etc.

I think your biggest competition will come from folks willing to take a photo for nothing :)

HA! True dat. I'll have to do some calculating but I think I could make some money, only time will tell. I'll let you know if/when I start it and how it goes!

Are you going to be inside the zoo? On zoo property? Or on public property somewhere outside?

I think your biggest problem will be that the zoo probably already contracts with people that do this.

Would Detroit Zoo let you do that on their premises? Over here in the UK the zoo wouldn't let you. Too many administrative hoops to jump through.(On the street outside possibly, but still the local council might frown upon it).

Yeah I would plan on being inside the zoo. Those were my initial concerns as well. Would they let me? And if so, would I have to pay them a fee to sell "merchandise" on their property?

everyone has a phone or selfie stick nowadays

Would people pay before or after the shot is taken? You might expend film on people who change their minds when they see the photo.

it seems like a nice idea, but you can probably find another way to make a few bucks with your camera that might be easier.

most destinations (zoos, museums, amusement parks, malls) don't allow that type of thing (usually because they are already doing it themselves). you could try to do it, but chances are you'll be asked to stop and/or leave before you make much headway.

this type of thing is a tough sell these days. some people still like to get physical prints, but they don't like having to carry them around. most people want something digital that they can immediately share. i think that's why photo booths are so popular, especially the ones where you have a choice as to getting a print or email. and the nice thing about them (from a business standpoint) is that all you do is put it in place and it does all the work - collecting the money, shooting, processing, printing/sending - and you don't have to worry about getting stiffed by someone who changes their mind.

now, if you just want to do this for fun and if the money is just icing, find a pretty park (or some place that gets decent foot traffic) with a nice background, and set up and shoot what you can. chances are you'll get a few customers and have some interesting conversations, even if you don't make a lot of money.
