I have had more than my share of these types of comments lately and have had my fill of them. Comments to the effect of "oh, I'm not a fan of these studio type of shots"
My take on people who have such disdain for the "studio" look is that they either A) don't have the space or money to set up a home studio with strobes or B) they are scared of trying to work with flash so they mask that fear by saying "oh, I only work with natural light" as if that somehow makes them a more "pure", holier than thou photographer than the rest of us.
When I get these comments I often think of this quote from David Hobby on the Strobist website:

"I am a purist, I only shoot available light."

(Translation: I am scared shitless of flash.)

Ok, just needed to get that of my fat chest

Why can't someone "not be a fan" of (this or any other) genre? Do you yourself claim to like equally EVERY type of photograph?

And, if you can actually divine someone's philosophical mindset and technical abilities from a one-sentence posting on-line, then I think the US security apparatus has a job waiting for you ...

it probably has to do more with the lack of originality in the light setup. if you use lights in a creative manner its interesting and fresh and more likely to be accepted, if you do a traditional lighting setup, its safe and unoriginal and could be boring.

Nope, but I do claim the right to vent in the rant forum

I can divine the tone many times, and it's not just online. I can name for you, several budding photogs in my area/at work who I have offered my studio to and they claim to be natural light photographers with that same air of superiority. What is frustrating to me is that they often fail to realize that the natural light shots they so admire of others more than likely had a flash involved. One coworker of mine I made the offer to years ago acted insulted, I checked in with recently and she no owns more flashes than I do....

Yeah, me too ... sorry, I was definitely under-caffeinated when I posted earlier.
