In this thread wbanning had the idea for this SCARS thread following this comment from markwiley

"I would enjoy seeing a "This is what I would have entered if the stupid editing rules hadn't crushed my creativity" thread. In all seriousness, I would find it interesting and you might win some people over. While it would lack the placement and score aspects, I think you would get feedback and comments that might affirmation the success or failure of the image."

If you feel the impulse to push the boundaries of the rule set but you fear a DQ, this thread is where you post your alternative edit. Get some feedback. Maybe even create a "how I did it" tutorial.

First Rule of SCARS Club: PLEASE WAIT FOR ROLLOVER BEFORE YOU POST YOUR ALTERNATIVE EDIT.

Second Rule, but really it's more of a suggestion: please include your entry, your original, & your alternative edit to get more comments.

Okay, since I suggested this thread, I'll start.

Here is my May Free Study entry next to a version that takes liberties with a "texture" that is actually an overlay of clouds. Even though the texture is applied uniformly across the whole image (which is not a requirement), there is a concern that the texture has created a feature not present in the original (clouds). So, I believe that in order for the second image to be legal, it would need to be in the Expert ruleset.:

I'm intrigued both by the addition of a more interesting sky, but also the blending of color and monochrome elements in the second image. Not sure it would have done better, but it certainly would have been ripe for a DQ.

I'd love to hear from anyone about my ruleset interpretations, which come largely from this recent thread about the DQ of this image for adding cloud/textures:

I'd also like to get any feedback on the processing effect of the second image.

Glad you posted this.

That's what I find so interesting--the starting image is excellent but not very interesting (unless you are in the Navy or Coast Guard). But with the texture layer it become unique & an expression of your point of view. I guess the question is if this site is interested in a unique expression of your point of view, or mine, or is it interested in a photo documentary record. Anyway, a cloud of that size & texture that low on the horizon would be really wierd, so if I was thinking about it I could figure out it probably wasn't part of the original capture. But it makes a kind of a vignette, which helps me concentrate on the main subject. And I love what happened to the color. But I would bet $1 that SC would DQ it for adding a feature.

Maybe it'd help us all out if SC would make a special exception in Advanced rules just for dropping in a better sky. :)

But then photogs near the Aurora Borealis would win all the challenges ;P

LOL!!!

Though it may not seem like it, we ARE discussing certain tweaks to the rule sets. But we're doing it at a DPC pace :)

I thought that was the point of this thread initially ... to show what you could do with an image if another rule set was in place.

For example:
- I entered this shot in a minimal rules challenge - look at what I could've done in Advanced.
- I entered this shot in an advanced rules challenge - look at what I could've done in Expert.

Not so much a discussion about various rules and wanting to change them so to speak (not that you've really said that specifically Bill).

My entry for Liquid.

What I actually wanted to enter, along with an outtake.

Ever since I started watching DareDevil on Netflix, I have wanted to do a shot with the liquid outlining the body like in the opening credits. This seemed like the perfect chance. Unfortunately, I didn't think of it until late, so I didn't have the time or space to deal with the mess for my original idea, which would have been a portrait. You should have seen the look on my daughters face when I told her I might get her to dump this stuff over my head, I think she would have paid me to do it.
