Graveyard image that scored a 4.8 and a newly edited adjustment. I like how you can add multiple filters and really play with the slider.

This was a similar theme, all done in Nik: turned a daylight scene into simuated moonlight :-)

I haven't used Nik, but I use Adjust, DeNoise and ReMask extensively. I also get a reasonable amount of usage from Simplify for touching up the skin. That being said, I only paid about 150$-170$ for it (suite of 10 plugins) about 3 years ago at Joe McNally's one light two light seminar.

DeNoise is a great tool, and I had bought that first after checking out reviews online (the guy selling at the seminar gave me a discount off the sales price since I already had this one). Adjust is also a great tool and ReMask is just fantastic. I don't know if Nik has a masking tool like ReMask or not, I use it pretty much any time I am going to mask something, it's so simple to use and I would never be able to accomplish the same job in PS alone.

So all that being said, I wouldn't have paid $500 for it, even if DeNoise is better (I am not saying it is), I would make do with Define, as I am sure it works well as well. If there is no comparable masking tool, I would get ReMask though.

the total pkg for Nik is $149...that's everything. And it is continually being updated without having to re-buy.

Yes, that is about what I paid for the Topaz Suite (of 10) as well, and they have the same deal with upgrades. I was lucky on the price as it was heavily discounted at the time I bought it. Given the pricing quoted, I would go with Nik if I was buying now as well, but I would still get ReMask.

Tell me about the re-mask...how it differs from Ps? I use Ps and for me it's been easy...but then I haven't had other choices per say....

If you need to mask hair or something semi-transparent, it's hard to beat this. I'll admit, I am not great at using the selection tools in PS, as I bought ReMask quite a while ago and it's my go to tool for masking since it is very simple and accurate to use.

Looky there, I just noticed I should upgrade to version 4.

Has anyone tried Topaz Studio?

Now that Nik is no longer being supported by Google, I've started looking at Topaz Studio. It's a new iteration of Topaz products that provides a basic editing suite with "add on adjustments" (used to be plugins.

The basic Studio is free and it's not without some interesting options. Paying for add-ons is way cheaper than the plugins used to be. The whole thing still works as a plug in for PS and LR.

Not tried the studio but I am a huge fan of Topaz Adjust. I will check out the studio

I have studio. There is an enormous collection of presets and you can customise them. Yet another way to get lost in pp decisions.

I've begun using the free version of the Nik suite, after finally upgrading my Paintshop Pro to a newer version that will support the plugin. The only Topaz plugin I'm still routinely using is Denoise.

But I'm curious.

I do love my Nik stuff - especially Silver Efex. I'll keep using it until it is unusable, but I'm beginning my quest for the next option. Frankly, using Silver Efex has given me the confidence to understand processing B&W to the point that I usually start out trying to create the look I want in LR and then going to SE to see if there's a better look. There usually is... sigh.

Like you, I absolutely love Silver Efex and am really sad it is no longer being supported. I've been using it since Nik first started with the program in 2010 (yes, I paid for it, quite a lot of $$ in fact). However, I have also started to use OnOne as an alternative. This is being developed constantly (although some of the updates are paid updates) and is turning into a pretty powerful tool. I find myself using the colour effects in OnOne more than the Nik Color Efex these days. B&W I am still using Nik, but mainly because I haven't had time to re-create the similar presets that I have used in Nik. I will do this soon, as you never know when Nik will stop working.

ETA. I don't like the latest version, OnOne Raw 2017, for B&W as much as I like the older versions of the software.

The adjustment brush in LR goes a long way towards emulating what's most useful to me in SEP: the ability to target specific areas and assign structure and contrast to them.

The current release of Studio has issues running from within Lightroom, which isn't a big deal for me, since I do creative post in Photoshop with layers. I've found that you have to change your workflow with Studio, do all your Topaz filter processing within Studio, then go back to Photoshop. Eliminates setting layer opacity in PS before going onto another filter.

That being said, to respond to the OPs question, for me, the critical Topaz filters are:

Adjust
Glow
Impression
Texture Effects.

And for Black and White conversion, I do better in Lightroom vs Silver Efx or Topaz B&W.

I keep forgetting that there are topaz filters I haven't tried. I'll have to give glow and impression a shot.

But Nik hands down if I had to choose. I can't remember the last time I used topaz other than denoise.

WIth Glow, a little bit goes a long way. The hardest filter for me to get a handle on.
