Hey Andrew, welcome to the site... I hope you have a great time and learn plenty on here. I know I did!

*singing badly* 'Welcome to the jungle, we got fun n games....'

RUN!!!!!! While you still can!!! ;-)

Ok Andrew, you will learn a lot here. Hopefully your mentor gave you some idea as to how tough this site can be when it comes to entering challenges. Having said that, this is still my go-to site for virtually any topic at all related to photography.

I've been here going on 10 yrs now, so it can't be that bad, can it? *muwahahahaaaaa...*

Hello Andrew.

May your shutter be reliable, your internet connection fast, and your mind open. This place can make you crazy, but it also has many great people so willing to share what they know.

Have fun and welcome.

Welcome, Andrew! Have fun with the challenges, but also check out the side challenges (no rules, no score), and enjoy the forums. People are very happy to share their knowledge, which is my favorite part of this site.

Now go make sure your camera time and date are set correctly. You can thank me later :)

Welcome Andrew!
My advice would be to enter all the challenges (at least the Tuesday ones until you decide to pay for a membership), whether you think you have a good shot or not. Plenty of great photos come about by pushing yourself to come up with something and shoot it before the deadline.

About a year ago, I started entering as many challenges as possible. Sure, most of the entries were nothing special but a lot of them would never exist if not for this site.

You've got an hour and 20 minutes if you haven't entered the current one yet!

There are many on here who will be happy to look at a few of your prospective entries before the challenge starts via PM and provide constructive criticism if that's something you'd like. I am always willing as long as I see the message before that particular challenge starts.

Because when your finish in the top 5, your image will need to be validated. And one of the dumbest DQs is when you have a great picture but your camera time/date shows you took it outside the challenge dates :)

Someone can also request that your image be validated during the voting phase, if they suspect a rules violation. So read the editing rules carefully and ask questions if you have any doubts. You can also send the image to SC for their feedback before you enter, but I'd suggest you don't wait until the last minute...

Welcome aboard, Andrew. Remember, everyone's your friend here, so there are no dumb questions.

Oh, and another very important thing you need to do: read and understand the rules BEFORE submitting an entry!!!

I can't count the number of times that a stunning image by a new member ribboned, only to be later DQ'd, usually cause they dug into their archives and submitted an image shot before the challenge was announced. This is another reason for the time/date settings being accurate in camera. The usual time frame for a challenge is one week. In the case of Free Study, you can enter any image you took that month. And currently the Best of 2015 is already open and running. That's when you can enter your best pic that you took all year, and if you change your mind about a shot you want to enter, then you can unsubmit the current entry and put in a new one. *note to self: do this*.

Yes, there are challenges where you can go back through your files and enter an image shot years ago. Hidden Gem, for example, is a great example.

Welcome Andrew...

May you survive!! Watch out for the ones that bite, or maybe like to chew until marks are made LOL!

All in all, a great group of peeps here, enjoy!

FWIW you don't need to "Unsubmit" your entry if you change your mind -- you can just upload a new image to replace it and update the other relevant info.

And welcome Andrew -- expect the scores to be a little lower than you anticipate ... :-)

Also... I learned the most from this site by voting and commenting on others' images. It made me stop and think about what I like or dislike about each photograph... and that's how I helped others (even when my opinion was only my opinion... nobody cared) evaluate THEIR photograph. Even if they didn't agree with me on it, it still made them stop and consider another person's idea about their image. Then, they either took what I said and applied to their later photos, or they said I was a nutball, was wrong, and continued doing what they'd done before.

Either way, we were both better by the exchange of ideas.

I set a challenge for myself... to comment on every image in one challenge.

Then, I did another one... :)

Start small. Learn a bunch. :D
