Hey all

I am planning on finally launching a photo side business, but each time I think up a name that I like and would work well, it's already taken. Even if it's owned by someone in a different part of the world, I still don't want to look like a copycat.

I know of course that I could just fall back on using my own name, as many photogs do, but that seems done to death.

Any suggestions?

Is there a specific genre you are shooting? Portraits?

Whatever you decide on, buy the domain name immediately if you want '.com' (and think about grabbing '.co' and '.org' as well). I had mine all set did my WhoIs searches and saw that it was available, and then decided to get it done the next morning as it was late in the day. When I went back it was sucked up by a speculator that somehow gains access to the search logs, expecting to sell it to me at a price. Better to waste a couple bucks on a name you wind up not using than to have to go back and start again.

The best :)

I've heard the advice that using your name is just as fine or better than a business name, in the photography business.

That's what I ended up doing after many different ideas. Everything else becomes corny. Caveat: not my main job

Thanks everyone for the ideas and potential names :-)

In terms of specializing, I don't want to be pigeonholed. I am really drawn to environmental portraits, where my subject is relaxed, wearing their favourite clothes and in their favourite setting, talking about what they love...witness my friend Matt who grows the best frickin produce around on his farm. I got this shot about two exposures in.

But I also would like to try some band photography, and of course continue to shoot wildlife, maybe try some pet/owner ports too. Basically the door's open.

Stuff I don't want to shoot - weddings, maternity and baby/infants. For me, weddings are controlled chaos, and I've seen far too many cheesy maternity shots to want to pursue it. Babies and infants tend to do things like cry and scream, which I can't tolerate.

Great shot of Matt.

Pets are like some folks' children... Just sayin.
