Does the portrait say more about the photog than the subject?

I think each photographer did their job - capture the essence of the person they were photographing. The fact that they were lied to (I don't say that judgmentally) means little as they were given a brief moment to grab the person they were told was sitting in front of them.

If you want to assess your question, tell them all the same thing (it can still be a lie) and have them shoot the same person.

I should add that a portrait should be a reflection of the person more than the photographer, but the person behind the camera has been charged with using their gift to act as the lens through which other people will view the subject, and that is their job when it comes down to it.

I would also love to see them given 10 minutes to capture someone they're told nothing about and see how each treats the time. The best photographers will spend half of it talking and get fewer, and likely better shots.

All valid points Jake. We also don't know if during the time with each photog whether he acted the part or portrayed the same character in each session. It could be argued that each photo, while different, is an accurate representation of the subject before them.

Hmmmm, too many variables to make any determination. How I approach a subject is at least half influenced by the purpose of the portrait. Perhaps I work differently, but I just try to bring out a person's energy. I often shoot without knowing their backgrounds, or even their jobs (unless their actors...).

I'm not sure this "experiment" says as much about the influence the photographer has on the outcome of the image, as it does about the information they are given before they start. Any portraitist worth their salt will try to incorporate information given about the subject into the shot.

I think the "psychic" shot is the best :)

Interesting. I wonder how I do this when I'm shooting clients. I rely on what they say, how they act... shy, bold, outgoing, athletic... etc.

And that's why I like to shoot environmental portraits, where my subjects are where they are comfortable, wearing what they want to wear, looking how they want to look. They have no facade to hide behind, and they shouldn't feel that they have to hide anyway.

Re the vid - anyone else notice how the subject (who imnsho looks like the lead vocalist of Midnight Oil) flinched away from the female photogs? They were in his personal space far too much, trying to touch him or his clothes, and he didn't like it at all. FWIW I liked the fisherman one best; I think he looked very comfortable and relaxed.

ETA: Oh yeah it was sponsored by *ugh* Canon....need a Nikon shooter say anything more? *ducking for cover*

I believe that was when he was pretending to be the ex-con, so I think he was just trying to stay in character.

I thought that too, but if you look carefully the second female photog - they're both blondes, but you only see her from the back in that shot - you can see his discomfort there too. Think that was the psychic one.
