Curious...
- How old were the cards?
- Where did you purchase them?

Probably not more than a year old and I purchase everything from B&H.

I format the card every time I reuse it.

This has happened twice. I had one card in the reader and removed it. Put the new card in the reader with the new pictures I took today and it copied yesterday's pictures from the previous day (the ones on the ejected card) onto it and my current files went poof. Recovery software finds the same photos on both cards. Both times this happened was with the same 32GB card in the camera. It has to be the card right?

Well not sure but I sent you some really bad vibes recently so it could be that.

Maybe the universe is asking you to upgrade to a 64-bit system.

I think it would be cheaper to buy a couple of 16GB cards:(

This sounds a lot more like a software issue in the card transfer side of things, not a hardware issue. A card reader doesn't "store" anything, it's just a conduit between card and computer. Somewhere there's a software that "told" the card what to do, and that's not ON the card for sure.

I agree with Robert. The way you describe it, the card never failed to read or write. It just contains the wrong pictures. Sounds like a software or workflow issue. I tend to transfer the pictures directly from camera. This is normally one way: from camera to the computer but not vice versa.

What I don't do is eject the card before I remove it from the MAC. Maybe I corrupted something? And then it didn't know what to do so it tried to restore what it saw last?

Yes, Lynn. You always need to eject the cards. Definitely just removing them can (not always) cause them to get corrupted. I learned my lesson with this the hard way too.

Can you see any of the pics you are looking for if you put the card in the camera?
I had a similar problem once, and was able to transfer the pics from the camera via USB connection.
With your Mac, try connecting/ inserting the card via reader or directly plugging it in, then open Disc Utility, in Apps/ Utilities. If the card shows up there, you may be able to repair it by using that option in Disc Utility.
If it was pulled out without ejecting it, there may be a long delay before the computer "finds" it.

I agree, that is very likely what happened. Always eject the cards before removing them especially on a Mac.

I tried disk utility. It finds the reader and the card is there but the new files are missing.
I reviewed all my images in camera before I took the card out and put it in the reader.
But now the camera just says read error.

I think Mac must place a file on the card to help read/transfer the images and that's what got corrupted when I pulled the card out of the reader without ejecting it first. It's just hard to believe I never had this problem before now because I've not once "ejected" anything properly. Live and learn. Thank you all.

Sorry you could not recover the images.
Try iPhoto if you still have that on your Mac. If iPhoto opened in the background "under the radar" when you inserted the card, it may have tagged the images or modified them some way that confuses the other programs.
Sandisc has a good recovery app if you haven't tried that one yet.
SanDisc Recovery link.
I know it's frustrating to have something like that happen.
