Ok -- it's not really a challenge to make abstract comments... Although that could be fun. :)

The current theory is that everyone has a different opinion on what's abstract. Many of us don't even have a definition of abstract it's just: we know it when we see it.

I think comments on the abstract challenge could be interesting.

I challenge you to comment on the first 7 entries that come up in voting (~10 %). Tell us what you honestly think of the entry and it's fit to the challenge and any other thoughts you have on it.

Post here when you've done your 10%.

I'll also make a special bluebird of happiness award for commenting for anyone who comments on 100%!!

Abstracts are fun. DPC has given me a much greater appreciation for abstracts because of the comments, the challenges, the discussions. Let's keep it going!

Already done but it wasn't necessarily the first 7. For me the count was easy because I try to make 10% on every challenge anyway.. and I could be convinced to go to 100% here... but I won't change my commenting style. If you're looking to discover whether a viewer (me) sees the images as abstract or not, I maybe could add that.

I just did a dozen but I only did the ones I liked.
I'm not going to give a negative critique.

I don't know about anyone else, but I prefer any critique at all.

Awesome!!! That's enough. I'll create a bluebird for you when the challenge finishes.

Ok -- I'm starting on this. My comments are ending up rambling and most will probably think they're stupid. Because I'm simply going through my thought process on the photo: I'm thinking out loud without editing. So it is what it is.

While people might find them unhelpful and stupid, I'm finding it an extremely interesting exercise. When I'm thinking something isn't abstract, I'm actually trying to figure out WHY I think that. Not just accepting my first opinion, but tracking down my own definition instead of "yeah -- that's not abstract". It's interesting.

I'm only at 5 comments. This could take a little while. :)

Ok. Breaking for a bit, because that last comment seemed way harsh. Sorry -- I'm not usually that outspoken. But I'm at 8 comments given.

While I did so in my comment section I also want to make sure I do this here. I'd like to thank Don for his insightful and honest commentary on my image during this challenge. It's the type of comment I came to this place seeking 2 years ago and have honestly never gotten until this challenge. It's the type of comment that cuts with a surgeon's precision, with the goal to heal and not scar. It's the type of comment that makes me reconsider the value of this place if others would be willing to offer them up. Thank you, Don. You're a reason to stay.

For the rest of you, and particularly those who would refuse to post "negative" comments, I would challenge you to take another look at why that is. No one likes to be negative, but can you be insightful enough in your criticism that it offers something to build on afterward? If not, are you really looking at the image before you toss it a number or are you simply just trying to get through voting? If you have something to offer this place it should be more than just a photograph.

Please take into consideration that some people can put into words what they see WAY better than others. Don is not only artfully insightful, he is literate. There are a few people on this site who join him. If I were in that category, I wouldn't mind throwing a critical comment out there.. but I know it's best for me to like what I like and say so. I believe I look at every image with a critical eye, take creativity much into consideration (because that's what I enjoy most) and vote accordingly. My comments are just an affirmation of that process, when I give them. I wish I could offer more:)

I do. But just because you don't think you can express yourself doesn't mean that you shouldn't try. Similarly there are those of us who can wrap words around anything but simply may not have the artistic insight into what we're looking at to explain why it is we find it unappealing. The heart of my point is that our shortcomings shouldn't prevent us from expressing ourselves to the point that we are actually able.

I could never do what Don did in the way he did it. But I could certainly do it for a subset of the images that I gave a 4 or 5 to. We all could.
