I am looking at purchasing a new camera. Looking at the Canon 70D, upgrading from a 50D. Has anyone purchased from 42nd Street Photo? They have a great deal but have seen mixed reviews...

If it seems to good to be true, it probably is... as Len's post clearly indicates. There are a *bunch* of retailers out there that troll these low prices, then when they have your payment information turn into your worst nightmare; product suddenly becomes out of stock unless you buy their expensive, junk accessories. Items that are included in the standard boxed product suddenly become expensive options. You name the scam, they will try it.
If you want a fair price and good service, try Adorama. There are other reputable sellers and I'm sure you will get other good recommendations. You also should be aware that the 80D has been announced; you might want to look at the features of the 80D to see if it might be worth a short wait. Alternatively, once the 80D is shipping, there might be good deals on the 70D (from reputable folks).

Yeah, when you see a brand new item listed for half the price elsewhere, your alarms and flags should be going off all over the place.

To save money you might think refurbished, or try reputable used gear places like Fred Miranda. Or even DPC :)

Thank you all! At first glance I didn't see any of the negative reviews but am so glad I looked into it more and took my time comparing. I have been trying to take the leap for a couple weeks now and just couldn't pull the trigger. Will definitely look at the other retailers I am familiar with. Thank you for the reminder about Fred Miranda also!

Wow! I'm not sure how I missed the 80D announcement with all the googling I've been doing! Definitely worth looking into! Thank you!

cameras (and lenses) will be the same price everywhere so you may as well buy from a reputable dealer because they will have the lowest price. there is really no point shopping around for a great deal, unless you can purchase it tax-free somehow.

also check out canon refurbished. they are about 10% less than retail as are usually more reliable than new since they have actually been checked to make sure they work properly.

Don't be concerned about purchasing from 42nd Street Photo. The old adage that kirbic quoted "If it seems to good to be true, it probably is" doesn't necessarily apply with them.... especially if you are smart, careful and understand their "game".

I bought a Nikon D810 from them a couple of weeks ago for $2099. That seemed too good to be true since the regular price is around $3200-3300. I placed the order suspecting that I knew exactly what I was getting (I'll get to that in a moment.)

A couple of days later came the telephone call that I was sort of expecting. They wanted to "confirm my order". I said, "Yep, Nikon D810, body only, I have plenty of batteries". Often, these places with prices "too good to be true" count on upselling you over the phone...usually with accessories that they assure you that you need such as batteries. He then went straight to the extended warranty. I asked them if it came with a USA warranty and they said that it comes with a warranty. I repeated the question and they then knew that I knew what I was doing and he answered that it is gray market.

What he didn't know is that I was the General Manager of a very reputable camera superstore in downtown Miami, a place rampant with unscrupulous electronic and camera stores. I don't have a problem with gray market when I am saving over $1100. Good extended warranties can be bought elsewhere. But what surprised me is how strong his efforts to sell me a warranty was and how much of a price break he was willing to give me just to make the extra sale. For the fun of it I strung him along a little bit to see what he would do next and how low he would go. I truly expected that he would eventually tell me that a mistake had been made, that the camera was no longer in stock, and that they would refund my money. As I said, I was surprised that he eventually gave up and I received the camera only two days later. All is well!

Anyway, short story: they can be trusted. You just might have to put up with some strong sales tactics but everything should be alright with them.

No advise from me for US sellers, but a few minutes ago I bought a new (additional expensive compact) camera. Not much difference in price here (the Netherlands), but you can notice the difference between the shops in their actions. The normal shops add some (mostly useless) stuff to it, the better shops thinks more about what you need (eg. a spare battery and/or memory card). Ok, I admit, the Canon cashback action was completely worthless in my case, but (being a Canon fan), that's a nasty habit of Canon for years now.
