Which one do you rather have?

A vote?

Or a comment?

Which means more to you to get?

A comment! Although a whole lot of comments and no votes would be weird.

If I gotta choose:

One comment > one vote

Wait... what's the vote? Because, if it's a 7 or higher...

Definitely a comment, harsh or otherwise.

This is a competition site... if nobody votes there would be no competition. So everybody should vote and, hopefully, the process will inspire commenting! Receiving no comments is not fun so I give my share of them too.

I really don't get the point of this question. Especially in the context of dpc.

I'm disregarding the way the site works... and...

I'm just asking which one YOU would prefer to have... a vote or a comment.

vote, most likely. While I really enjoy comments, they're few and far between and many times are of the "I love it" type. While these feel really good, I think the votes tell more of a story of whether you're making an impact.

Maybe a question would be

Which is more valuable to your growth as a photographer--giving comments, or receiving them?

If I had to choose between getting comments & giving them I would choose giving comments. Especially if I could comment honestly, without looking over my shoulder in case my comment is unacceptable. I learn a lot from a long thoughtful look at someone else's work. The only comment I received that impacted me took years to get over. Someone noted the area in my comp where the color was blown out. Up until then, I'd been thinking of it as white space, because before I picked up my camera again I'd been doing watercolor, where white space is valuable. That was my first hint that photographers see the technical first, & technicals must meet expectations before they can see anything else, but mostly photographers seem indifferent to art. Art has no recognized place in photography. It took me a while to realize I don't care, it's more important to stay true to my muse. I do better abstracts than photorealism, & they're pretty well received here, for abstracts, so I'm OK.

But really, nobody can understand your work better than you. So, the safest thing to do is to comment on the technicals, which are pretty much standard for all photographers. That's why the artist-photographers among us are interested in the viewer's first reaction to the comp. Not the technicals--the first reaction--because sometimes technicals are used as a tool of expression.

yes! what the pixpig said.

and really how can a photographer develop unless she allows herself to feel what she sees?

If a comment tells me something I didn't know, I'll take that comment over a vote.
Comments like that are not incredibly common but there are a few I have received here that remain in my head to this day.

Having said that, it doesn't make much sense to weigh the two against each other (votes/comments).
I am truly surprised that we get so few entries sometimes - but equally surprised that we get so many votes considering. I'm truly happy so many people vote - and I only want to encourage more of it. I'd encourage comments as well - just not in lieu of voting.
