Okay, folks: the poll on whether y'all want to allow cropping in Minimal Editing was up for a week, and 254 of you made your preferences known. 137 of you sounded off in favor of allowing cropping in Minimal Editing, and 117 of you were against it. Not what you'd call a clear community consensus on the subject, unfortunately. Both sides of the argument made some good points in discussion, and there's no obvious "winner". Bear in mind that this was a poll, not a vote; SC and Administration use these polls to judge the sentiments of the members and use the information gathered to inform their decisions from time to time, but they are not bound by the results.

That said, it seems obvious to us that if we make the rule be either/or we're going to have unhappy members whichever way we do it. So it seems clear to us that, going forward, we should schedule some Minimal challenges that allow cropping and some that do not. It also seems to us that the topics themselves will help determine which "version" should be used, and we'd hope also that those members who propose minimal challenge topics would indicate which "version" they visualize for the challenge. And this is what we're intending to do.

Now, let's think about how the "base" rule should be written: generally, we feel it's a LOT better to have the more limited rule in the books, then to flag the challenge as necessary to indicate that cropping will be allowed. Basically, it's a bad idea to have a more liberal rule and flag exclusions to it, but it makes perfect sense to flag additions to a limited rule. Our reasoning is that we don't want to foster a situation where someone notices "minimal editing" but misses the flag, and is disqualified for doing something the base rule allows. By making the more limited version the base rule, that possibility is eliminated; anything you would do under the "no cropping" Minimal Editing rules will still be legal when cropping is allowed.

So, it's our intention at this point to keep "no cropping" as part of the Minimal Rules but to run as many "flagged to allow cropping" challenges as we do the "no cropping" version. We'll do that at least for a few months and see how it shakes out. Hopefully, everyone can live with this. And, finally, we'd like to thank all of you for engaging in such a spirited discussion on the subject, and for turning out in such impressive numbers at the polls. Hopefully, this means we'll get at least 117 entries in every Minimal Editing challenge going forward :-)

I do not know if Art can be called back from the mission I sent him on. A few villages of "aye"-sayers may be burned down before I can stop him. Just regard it as a lesson on doing polls on the internet.

That's the wrong Art anyway. Art_Roflmao withdrew from DPC some time ago :-(

So everybody's safe. Phew! Didn't know his profile name was taken up by a new member. Sorry.

A great way to move forward with this one.

I think this is an overall good decision and I was pleased to see both sides of the argument, well done.

Well done, SC. That is THE single most sensible way to keep peace and make the largest number of members happy for at least a good chunk of the time.

You are making the most out of a slightly sticky situation, I'm impressed.

I didn't get it "my way", but I thank you for your smart decision from the bottom of my perfectly exposed, rule of thirds/diagonal/leading lines, giant aperture lens-heart.

Well done on the decision!

I know its not easy you all, just know you all are very appreciated even though it may seem that you may feel under-appreciated,
Always going above and beyond..

SC has always been fair no matter what has been decided..

Kudos SC

Thank you. That seems a reasonable solution.

The current OPEN Dutch Angle challenge is pretty much the easiest minimal challenge in history (just be sure to not hold your camera level and be sure to shoot in JPG mode). We should be expecting AT LEAST 117 entries, right? And that assumes sour grapes ... which, naturally no one should have because of the diplomatic decision ;)
Now get shooting! =))

Nice, diplomatic decision.

Of course, the decision that could please everyone would be to eliminate Minimal Editing forever.

Runs for the hills...

So with all this discussion going on I hadn't realized this challenge was minimal edit AND I had already tried to shoot for it... lucky for me I had the camera set to RAW + jpeg so my images are usable!

1 day an 11 hours left - only 23 entries - c'mon folks.

My entry is in.

OK ... please make me regret this promise: I will comment on and score all images if we get to 117 entries received.
Anyone else want to take the challenge?

Heck, maybe I'll create a special new pixelated award to give out ;)
How's that for motivation? =D

I've checked, my entry's date is fine, no abacus needed.
7 hours left only 41 entries.
