In agreement with you Johanna. Wood and fire don't mix - I do hope that they are charged with trespassing and arson. It makes me very mad - and what if that fire had gone beyond the Monroe Station to the surrounding brush and trees at Big Cypress?!?! It could have been a massive fire destroying the natural habitat. Idiots!

Reminds me of this one, which was on a city next to mine: http://petapixel.com/2016/05/09/126-year-old-statue-smashed-tourist-selfie-stick/

This isn't even the only steel wool fire recently: http://petapixel.com/2016/02/23/iconic-shipwrecks-fire-likely-caused-light-painting-photographer/

Although I do struggle to take much of that backlash seriously...

Structurally unsafe? It's a wrecked ship!

Was the guy an American/US tourist? I read other accounts and commenters were speculating it was a US tourist... Just wondering...

It'll be like gun control... steel wool control.

From the little I can see, I am going to guess Middle Cove, and if I am right, there is hardly any sand either :)

i had not heard about that vandalism until reading this thread. I was out at Pt Reyes a few days ago and what's left of that boat is now partially hidden behind a tall board fence. It's difficult to get near enough to it for a photograph. This was with a long lens: Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1181073.jpg

Re the original post:
Monroe Station was built shortly after the first road passable by automobiles was built across the Everglades. It housed riders who would ride / patrol sections of the highway, and gave a place to stop and get fuel and water to people who were traveling the road when cars were not all that dependable.
Later, during the late 50's and early to mid 60's when I was growing up, it was "the" destination for and also the starting out point for swamp buggy travelers going into or coming across the Everglades from the north or south.

It's sad that a photographer's foolishness caused it's demise before it could be restored. Maybe they will build a replica of the original building, which would be a pretty cool outcome for the disaster.

My dad, worked delivering fuel and oil to the dredge that was digging the canal along that road when it was being built in the late 20's.

Morons. If you don't know that spinning steel wool throws off masses of live sparks, then you're all kinds of idiot already. Hell I'm super-careful even using sparklers for shoots!! I hope they nail this guy to the wall for sheer stupidity.

Pitty. The social media prima donnas have ruined it a while ago. *rant on* Thankfully the National Parks are going after them. Adding a few more to the list: Those that trespass to shoot designer shoe selfies while hanging off the tall building and bridges in big cities. The worst of them (the one who annoyed me the most) was the snowboarder that was being towed by a car through the snowy streets of Manhattan. Ended up almost clipping and causing more than one accident. And that's the part they did show. There was a vehicle ban that day. Only taxis and emergency vehicles allowed on the roads. *rant off* phew

The sad truth is that this sort of stupidity will not only not go away, but is on the rise. With the ever-increasing competition to get "original" and unique and extraordinary imagery, people will go to any length to capture them. Even if it means endangering themselves, others, and land/property.
