Right, i need to buy myself some flash memory for some higher altitude photography (i have a microdrive currently). I want a gig of space but i'm not sure whether to go for a 1gig card or 2 x 512's.
What would you do? I know it is good to spread out your data so if you lose or damage the card you don't lose everything but i'm thinking the 1 gig card would only ever come out of my camera if i'm sitting at my pc. Therefore very little chance of getting damaged or lost.
Thoughts?

I feel safer with multiple 512 vs 1 or 2 large cards... I'm more worried about manufacture defects or random failures than caused by me damage...
I think it's all preference, but most people I talk to who do sports photography with higher than normal camera risk, use multiple cards... |

| If I could afford 1 gig, I would prefer the convenience of one card rather than multiple. You don't have to worry about changing cards etc. Just leave it in, and fill it up. |

My vote goes for multiple cards, it minimises loss in case one card decides to take a hike.... lol

I'd go for two cards, but only because I have an iPAQ Pocket PC and two cameras which all take the CF cards...

I'd prefer the ONE card definitely...I've had 1gb and 2gb cards (sandisk ultra2)...have beat them to death in numerous trying situations and have never had one problem with them.
While I understand the concern over the potential of using a whole gig card of photos as opposed to only losing half...but who is to say both of your 512 won't poop out on you?...in other words don't bother being paralyzed by fear...when will you ever make the leap to a higher card then? ...would 4x 256mb cards be better? :) ...I can recall numerous opportunities of watching 'magical minute moments' slip away that were missed by changing out cards, ya never know!...
as a side note you may want to look into sandisks' 'extreme' line of cards! |

I agree. If you don't have multiple CF-card using devices (and perhaps even if you do), go with the big card... |

I would generally cast my vote for multiple cards, the primary reason being that I would not want to be taken totally out of commission by one hardware failure and, although rare, these cards do occasionally fail.
That said, the downside of having multiple cards becomes apparent when I grab my camera and run out to shoot something then realize that I left my other card in the computer at home. That is a function of yours truly being disorganized which also happens.
By the way, the correct name for these cards is CompactFlash, not Compaq flash. The company Compaq which is now part of HP had nothing to due with the memory cards.

Don't let the idea of convenience push you to make a HUGE mistake.
(and seriously folks, changing a card is what passes as inconvenient these days????)
Cards can crap out at ANY moment plus they're not indestructable..you drop them..lose them..etc...the larger the drive the more sensitive they are. For the sake of your sanity, don't put all your eggs in one basket.
I beg of you....

I got a 512mg CF SanDisk from Costco for like $45 bucks two weeks ago.
So that's retail pricing. I am sure you can do better online as well... |

Compact flash isn't indestructable, but it's more stable than you perhaps think..

I'm still undecided. I already have a 1 gig microdrive so unless i am at altitude (which is only once a year at the moment), i will have 2 if i go for the 1 gig COMPACTFLASH (Thanks dickwilhelm! ;) ).
I think 2 cards is a reasonable DR option for my purposes. I think.....
I suppose 2 512's downside is only the swapping card bit. Not really a problem if you have 3 cards and keep an eye on your exposure count. Where as the downside of 1 gig is a bit more frightening.....
I might just flip a coin to decide!! Although i think i'm leaning towards the 512's.

If you only have one card you can't shoot while you are unloading that card; and maybe that's when your 'magical minute moments' are going to occur. It takes a lot longer to unload a card than to swap in an empty one.
CF card speeds are getting faster and prices are coming down at surprising rates. You'll save money by getting only what you need now; and waiting until later for the luxury of having several extras. Don't fall into the trap of paying more for speeds that your camera cannot use.
CF cards don't fail very often. And almost all failures are because of mishandling or misuse, as in being dropped, stepped on, forced into a slot backwards, or hooked up to faulty hardware. If you trust yourself to use them correctly you can totally dismiss the possibility of card failure. The fact that several makers give lifetime warranties should tell you how reliable they are when used correctly. |
