That's the definition of the Munich photography marathon which is taking place on Saturday - and I registered in a moment full of hubris.

Participants have to take exactly 12 pictures within 8 hours to 12 given topics (which are announced Saturday morning at the meeting point) and create kind of an essay in the given order of topics.

Last year all the topics were children rhymes, another year the topics were the titles of Bavarian TV series.
I was looking at the submitted pictures of last year and found out that some of the photographers used utensils like glass balls or a playmobil figurine in order to create something like a continuous thread in all their pictures. I've no idea if that would really be helpful but I plan on taking at least some paper, marker pen, scotch tape and scissors with me as well as a torch.

Has anyone of you ever participated in a similar event and wants to share the experience? Or give any advice?
I would love to get some input because I start getting nervous....

That sounds like... amazing fun!

That sounds like a blast. I think I would consider taking a driend/assistant with me to help in any number of ways, maybe even model :)

We do something similar to this at our local camera club a couple of times a year. We call it Camera Capers.

We all meet at one given place and then 12 things are drawn from a hat (e.g. backlight, architecture, etc)
We have to shoot jpg and hand the images in at the end of the day.

We also have to shoot our in order and cannot erase so you have to take care to get settings correct and look around a lot before you shoot.

It's always a fun day and makes you think a lot.

The thing I hate the most is that it has to be shot in order. This makes it much harder. I often wonder around looking for all the shots and then go shoot them.
Time goes really fast. Make sure you have comfortable shoes on and you will have a great time.

If they have the JPG and unaltered as part of the rules, nows the time to learn some of the camera settings. I often find a shot that I want and shot in Black and White or I might make it a square crop because that suits. There is also diorama and things like that which could be useful.

You will have the best time.

We did something like this at the Cape Cod Art Assoc Camera club, which I am not longer active in now I have my own personal tutor (aka bear_music) !! But at the time I did it we could at least shoot them in any order. We had to fill in a form showing the file number corresponding to each category. The top three selected for each category by a panel of judges were shown at the next club meeting. A whole lot of fun, and being a relative newcomer to the cape, a "washed ashore", I also learned about a few places on the cape to take interesting photographs I didn't previously know about.

Tangera, yes people tended to join up and go in pairs etc. to pool ideas and or model.

Thank you all! You’re right – here is nothing to loose but only to win (if only experience) so I should relax and enjoy a fun day.

Johanna, I was planning to take our daughter along but she is member of a dancing group and they have a rehearsal for an important performance. I also asked at our small local photo club, but everybody seems to be busy with other things. Well, I have a few more days to find an escort. If I have to spend the day on my own I will have to ask people on the street if necessary (another challenge… )

Maria, it is exactly as you described it: shooting in the given order is required and I have to submit 12 unaltered jpgs at the end of the marathon day. There will be a jury of specialists to pick the winners. The prices are very attractive btw – the first price f.e. is a Leica T with a 23mm lens.
Thanks for reminding me to wear good shoes and to find out about the special settings my camera offers: that might provide a continuous thread in my pictures.

If you are interested I can tell you the topics and show you my results after the marathon.

Hi Barbara,

I went to one of those a long long time ago, but it was 24h and 2 hours per photo. It was terribly tiresome, and at some point I think we just gave up.
The topics were not very clear, as they were book titles. Strange book titles :)

I believe in these situations, the most important part is how the 12 photos come together and are linked, even if the quality is not stellar.
My advice is to, after finding out the titles, take some time in your head to know the script you want. Think of a way to tell a story, then even if a couple of photos are a bit shoehorned, at least you're telling your story.

Best of luck!

Due to the shooting rampage (8 persons killed!) in Munich yesterday evening the Fotomarathon was cancelled.

Yesterday there was absolute chaos. The shooting happened at a shopping centre, a big festival happened nearby. First they said that there might be more than one attacker. The downtown area had been sealed off, and the police are investigating. No public transport any more, the whole city in shock.

So I won't be able to tell/show you about the photography marathon, sorry

Dear Barbara,
It's truly heartbreaking to read about the violence. Munich, when we visited, seemed such a lively and welcoming city. I'm sure your photography club is discussing another date right now! Be safe.

I'm so sorry that your lovely city has been visited by this plague :(

Thank you for your kind words
It is just so sad and senseless...

Meanwhile the situation cleared up so that authorities don't talk about an act of terrorism anymore. It was a single gunman who killed himself after the attack. He seemed to have psychological issues, police found out that Andres Breivik (the madman who killed 77 people at the Norwegian Utoya) was his great role model. The attack in Norway happend at the same day exactly 5 years ago - July 22th 2011...

The very very sad thing is that today in Kabul, Afghanistan at least 80 people had to die because two suicide bombers have blown up. But public interest is much lower when such a cruelty happens in one of the flashpoints then in one of the countries which are considered to be "safe".

I wasn't in the mood to spend a frisky day taking pictures anyhow. The event is going to be at another date.
Thank you again

Tomorrow is the alternate date for the Munich Fotomarathon.

My registration from July is still valid so I'm going to participate. Just packed my backpack and checked my additional batteries...

I promised to give report about the Munich Fotomarathon which took place yesterday. So here it is:

The day was cold and covered in grey clouds, it was even raining in the afternoon. But I was prepared and had good walking shoes. Nevertheless I was jiggered when I returned home - also mentally.

For me it was quite difficult to come up with suitable ideas for the given themes. All participants got to know 6 of themes at 11 a.m. another 6 at 3 p.m. at a meeting point downtown and we had to deliver the unaltered jp files in the given order at 7 p.m.

Because it was the 5. Photography Marathon event in Munich all the themes had something to do with the number 5

It is difficult to translate some of them to English, because it doesn't have the 5 in it any more when you translate the meaning, the are just working as german phrases, but I'll try. and I'll show you my entry along with the challenge theme. Here they are:

1. Five (including your identification number - mine was #12)

2. To count 5 to the even numbers (which means: just take a break regardless how much there is still to do)

3. A little bit of... Mambo #5
This refers to a song of Lou Bega which was quite popular in Germany in 1999:
Mambo Nr. 5

4. Handful

5. 5% trial
This challenge refers to a political rule for elections in Germany: If a party doesn't have at least 5% of valid votes it isn't allowed to have a seat in the parliament. This is to avoid a fragmented structure of the parliament.

The building in the bg is the Munich townhall, seat of the city government

6. Nr. 5 is alive!
This is the German title of a movie from 1986, the original English title is "Short Circuit" with Robot Johnny Five

7. To be the fifth wheel on a car (to be the odd one out)

8. Give me five

9. Olympia

The meaning of words on the little card is: The most important thing is not to win but to take part! (Olympic motto by Pierre de Coubertin)

10. Five friends (a book series from Enid Blyton, the original title is "The Famous Five")

11. The famous/crazy five minutes (I dind't know that this refers to a special behaviour of cats, who seem to be mad for a few minutes without any obvious reason and then go back to normal again)

12 Five minutes to twelve (It's almost too late)

I'm far away from being satisfied with my entries, but I'm happy that I found "something" for every theme. And it was a good experience to kick in creativity on demand, it's not that easy...

The results are going to be published in December. I'll let you now if I won a flowerpot. And I will be very quiet if not!

Sounds like a lot of fun - and work at the same time. Nice job, my favs are 1,2,7 and 10. Thanks for sharing this marathon challenge.

congratulations on surviving such a photo-packed, challenge-filled day. I love what you captured. I hope your brain felt a bit of happiness during all that creative shooting.

I think you did great! I like the idea with the little tag that connects the different shots.

Thank you all for looking at my entries and giving me such a nice feedback!

Yes, besinde from being hard work it was also fun.
I have rarely the opportunity to spend such a long time to concentrate on taking pictures only. Usually there is always someone who wants to go to the next shop, a restaurant or home... I really enjoyed this day.

All of the participants had the same conditions as me so I'm curious now what the winning series looks like.
