The site was down for most of yesterday...and no explanation, or am I missing the explanation?

Yes totally agree. There really should have been an email sent out to all members to apologise for the downtime and explain the issues.

Bad timing as I just renewed my membership for another year. I hope things improve and that I have not made a mistake

That is soooooooooooo true.
I can understand that stuff happens, but we really, really should have had an email to explain.

NOT HAPPY.

My membership expired on the 20th. I was not going renew for a few other reasons, but yesterday firmed that decision up.

Unlike many web-sites, this site depends greatly on its members / participants.
Obviously it is not perfect but please hold tight.

Glad I'm not the only one, my membership has lapsed for quite some time, this just confirms I won't renew. I sure miss the heydays of DPC. It's a shell of its former self.

Thank you.

Everyone else, yes, the outage situation could have definitely have been handled better. But it was a glitch. It's been addressed and the deadlines have all been extended.

Let's all just calm down. If we decided to be "out of here" every time one of the sites we regularly visit went down, we wouldn't be on the internet.

Not on the internet? That is unthinkable. I don't want to go on picnics with you people.

Exactly. Things would have been easier if there was a home page that could have been substituted instead of not being able to access a script generated page, but since it seems like entire servers were fried that probably wouldn't have helped.

If this is the end of the world, folks, then your world's way too small.

I don't see why this could be a reason not to be with DPC.

Really

Now you're just putting words in people's mouths. No one ever said it was the end of the world. It is however part of the ongoing decline of this site. I'm certainly not interested in reviving the old, pages long threads of what could make this site better and ownership's lack of desire to do it, but why is it you can never raise a complaint without being scolded for it? If the people who are still here didn't care about this site, they wouldn't say anything!
Besides, if you're running a website and you want it to stay active, don't you want people to be upset when they can't access it?

"Let's all just calm down."

"I don't see why this could be a reason not to be with DPC.

Etc, etc.

I expected these typical apologist responses. I echo what smardaz has said. Like I mentioned above, my membership expired on the 20th. I got a generated note wanting me to renew, not asking me why I haven't. For 10 years I paid up. I get that this site needs money to keep going. I can't keep giving money to something that isn't evolving, or even updating itself even just a little. DPC Prints? A decent/appealing/modern looking portfolio I could link to if I wanted? And to be perfectly honest, it's responses like I've listed above, that I've seen given to others before now, that make me not like this place...that make this an uncomfortable place to be. There are other reasons I'm not renewing. But one important one is that sometimes it's like looking in at an old playground from the other side of the fence. It used to be a fun place, it tries to be a fun place once in a while...but a lot of the time it seems just too cliquey.

It's sad someone who has been a member for over 10 years can't ask why the site was down without loyalty being questioned or be accused of not having a life perspective. DPC used to be a happy place for me. I take care of a parent with Parkinsons Disease. It is hard watching a parent vanish before your very eyes, to see them struggle...trapped within their own body and mind.I do indeed have a life outside of DPC. I'm just a little upset one of my happy places has disappeared is all. My world is indeed small, but it has to be.

Check out the revised challenge:
When DPC Breaks.

DPC is, for what it is worth, heavily reliant on volunteers. The new SC members were an effort to move things into the future.
I for one, have always wanted to improve things - and naturally, things are never as quick or easy as we would hope.

SC did work together to create this challenge and hopefully it is a reminder that life is not perfect but DPC can be a fun part of it =)

Remember that the site is hosted by another company, not a on a bunch of computers in Langdon's house. If the server farm goes down, there's not exactly much can be done about it by any of the customers being hosted.

At least no one missed any flights because the site was down ...

I have been a member of this site since 2012 so I was not here in the heyday of DP. I am sure that those of you who were here in the days when there were 200 or more entries in each challenge see it as not the same. The world of digital photography has changed dramatically in that amount of time. With the increased improvement in cell phone cameras there is not as many people using full size digital cameras as there were before so not as many people who would be interested in a site like this. The beauty of this site is that it is very much driven by the members and this is rare on photography sites nowadays. You don't have to beg your friends and neighbors to vote for your entry as everything is anonymous and your shot is looked at as for it's merits not who shot it. I hear a lot of people complaining that they aren't renewing their membership and that is your choice frankly I find $25 a year a very cheap price for the chance to test myself against others, hear their comments, and challenge myself in an art form that I love. I find that the SC is very reasonable and has made a lot of changes in the past few months that have helped greatly. Would I like to see more changes? Yes I would but I am not leaving as I am still having fun and learning so much. I have gone from a hobbyist to someone who is now exhibiting in local galleries and selling my art. I thank DP for that. I am not sure what others are looking for but maybe you are looking for too much from a simple photography site. The simplicity of this site is what makes it so good.

Been here for years and Facebook longer. Never knew. Something there would have worked. Not for me, but it would have worked. And if it spoils the look of the page you can always delete the post when things are right as rain again.

The FB page has been around for a few years, and was discussed in the forums. A couple of posts went up there within a few hours of the outage, the nature of which impeded any sort of uploading or emailing at or through DPC. I'm not sure what else could have been done. Any suggestions?

Of course if all the back ups are in the same server farm then nothing could be done, including emailing members. Hosting everything in duplicate would cost more money. Maybe using something like Cloudflare** would help? It's basically a proxy but does loads more these days like controlling crawlers/bots, stopping DDoS attacks etc. If the site is down you get better error pages and can even browse the site prior to it going down (so can read forums but not post nor submit/vote). The price is from FREE to megabucks depending on what you need.

I'm one of the older members (careful) but never prolific. I have however paid my membership every year since 2004, even when I didn't visit for over 2 years but that was mainly so I could get to my archive images. This is probably my last year of paid membership.

** I said Cloudflare as I used them a few years ago with my sites but am sure there are similar companies out there today.

Create a twitter account run by someone who knows what the technical issue is. The dpc facebook profile isn't run by anyone on SC or Langdon, unless that has changed. For example, the GSMNP has a twitter account created specically for road, trail, and park closures. Twitter can be handy for such sporadic events, be it a road closure or a server problem.

+1 to an official Twitter page or another site on another server with latest status. Just somewhere official we can check when site goes down for any updates from the site owners to alleviate any pain.

That's where I looked also. Told me at least that the problem was global.
