I have entered the current challenge doing as I'm told, but I have also converted my picture to black and white in my camera (after the shot) and it looks much better. It was a straight out conversion - no sliders or anything. Could I use it?

For Pathways you can edit it, but I believe an edit in camera MAY alter the EXIF data to the extent where you'll lose the "untouched" original for submission if required. SC has likely dealt with it, so hopefully they'll chime in.

For Minimal Editing:
You may...
fully desaturate your image using your editing software's "desaturate," "convert to grayscale" or equivalent function. Customizable tools are not allowed.

I still have the original in camera. The new version has its own identity. Therefore, I suppose it may be considered a different shot when it comes to checking exif.

If the original is an unaltered JPG, then we don't care if the entry was converted in camera or in post. As long as it's clearly a straight conversion, which is true in either case. That is to say, anytime we have to validate a B/W conversion in minimal editing, we open the original in PS and do a "legal" conversion and see if they match.

For that reason, you'd be better off opening a copy of the color original and converting-to-grayscale in PS (or whatever you use) to be on the safe side. If the one the camera did "looks better", then the camera enhanced it in conversion.

That said, if you SET your camera to shoot in B/W mode THEN you can use all of the camera's contrast, sharpness etc adjustments as long as you dial them in BEFORE you shoot the JPG. Normally it's best practive to shoot in color and make the conversion in PS, but in minimal editing that's not necessarily true. It depends on the scene. Long story short, you're better off to work with the color original and convert a copy of it in post, no surprises that way.
