Maybe it's just me, but when I look through the extended free study I don't see many images that take advantage of the ruleset, so really it's just another monthly FS for some, which was not why it was introduced, right?! I'd love to see a restriction on the entries that either requires two or more images be used (or some combination of that and other Extended-only rules) or let's just do away with it.

Personally I think the Free Study should be killed and have just Extended because Extended does not mean that you cannot shoot in Minimal, it just gives everyone freedom to do whatever they want and feel comfortable with. The voting should be done in the same spirit :)

That makes more sense, but personally I like having two free studies a month. It's just unfortunate that when I entered an image which broke standard rules it didn't do well anyway, so mostly I've been entering photos that don't use the extended rules. I'm sure I'll eventually come up with something that does take advantage of them though, so I'd hate to see the extended free study go away.

Personally, I like the monthly option to be able to enter an image that is essentially unconstrained by both theme and editing rules. I have the opportunity to be as creative as I like. I have to admit that the mid-month deadline seems to creep up on me before I know it, and my ambitious editing plans are often cut short. But, that is on me. I need to start working on an entry sooner. I don't really mind if people use the challenge as an opportunity to enter another image that they are proud of even if it doesn't take advantage of the more unrestricted editing rule set.

I love the Extended Free Study it gives people the opportunity to explore more and not be restricted as much.

there are 63 entries in this month's extended free study. I enjoy it, I use the extended rules, and I don't want to kill it just because somebody doesn't get it. damn, it's one of very few things keeping me here.

I take lots of photos. My methods of shooting and postprocessing are adventitious/promiscuous/exploitive. I never know. The E FS is perfect for this method/non method.

There are not a whole lot of us. Playing/paying participants.

just because you can't perceive extensive editing doesn't mean it's not being done - not everything has to be a cartoon.
been here 10 years, most of those with very restrictive rulesets... extended fs is one of the better features introduced.
would also like a regular hidden gem/unrestricted date challenge.

My vote is to keep it

And, by the way, I never had a consistent score of 2! I quite like the surprise

Just my very personal opinion: it is indeed another FS study. There's really no need to take full advantage of the rules. Just enter an image you like.

I gotta tell ya, DPC never ceases to astonish me. Not all that long ago, when we decided to run the Extended Free Study monthly, we had people complaining that we were gonna turn ourselves into a Worth 1000, full of weird un-photographic transgressions against the Natural Order. Now, several months into the experiment, we're getting complaints that there aren't ENOUGH of the TATNOs and we should ditch the experiment?

What's WRONG with 2 free studies a month, one of which welcomes whatever sort of editing you choose but doesn't demand it? Seems like heaven to me!

And my point is not that you have to perceive the edit it's that in order to enter then it must have something that's only valid in the extended rules set. Otherwise as was suggested you could just open up the other free study to any level of editing.

No please keep it, I love it, I'm doing things I normally wouldn't do :)

but you based this whole thread on the fact that you could not perceive the edits.
thankfully the response has been overwhelmingly overruling.

Yes.

No!
08/16/2016 11:13:18 PM · #21
NO! I enjoy the heck out of it and I am able to start dabbling, and experimenting with the editing outside the norm is half of the fun.. if ppl want to enter regular images leave them be and let them do so. Who cares? Just give them 1s or something for not trying.

Isn't that what the point system is about anyway lol

I am happy it is still there and I am very happy there are no restrictions.

oo yeah Me 5

Well if people's vote's is going to be based on if images looks photshopped enough or not then yes, this is dead.
Why bother making something if it is going to be voted down for being to good or realistic.

I've wondered that also, if people's votes are based on whether it's expertly processed or not. I entered something once which wasn't and it didn't score well, but I did it for the purpose of testing the audience to see whether that's how they voted!
