+ on all this. It's winter. I don't get out much. But when I do, I really enjoy having a number of challenges to shoot for and consider. I have always enjoyed the teams I was on.

At this point, I don't really care, one way or the other, on the duration of Challenges.
Just so they exist.

However, I do lament the loss of the DPL. This chance to interact with others in DPC,
and to work towards a common goal is a terrific way to build friendships and strengthen
our community.

Still, I understand it is a tremendous amount of volunteer work for our Site Council and
for Langdon, so I can understand why it has been set aside.

Alice is right:

Why don't we adapt. Put in your calendar what you want to shoot or shoehorn...too many opinions. All these changes won't help the site. My 2 cents

I only did DPL once and enjoy begin part of the Underground team of passionate visionaries (maybe blurred visionaries is a better characterization).

But, I wondering if the challenge of running a DPL with the diminished number of participants recently has something to do with it's absence.

If anything, DPL would bring some people back, right? And about the duration thing... I'm another one that really doesn't care one way or another, but I do like the number of challenges. Being more active on DPC again was kind of on my list of resolutions this year. I'm eagerly waiting for DPL! How about we quit trying to fix what ain't broken and get on with it... or am I missing something?

It's not the smaller number of active participants that is holding up DPL, it's strictly a programming issue. As I understand it (and this is just a personal observation) the site was coded, by hand, back in the stone age (like, 2002!) and it's completely archaic coding. So it's not like any of our members, for example, who understand modern website creation etc can just step in to HELP Langdon :-( And Langdon's a young father with two children and a very responsible job, unlike in 2002 when he and Drew were bachelors flexing their wings. So when we switched up to 2 weeks on the challenges (which as far as we can see has been a VERY good thing) we basically dropped the hammer on Langdon because there's a LOT of work to be done, laboriously and by hand, to adapt the DPL to the new format. Same goes for all the other changes we'd love to see, sadly. I'm honestly not sure if there's any workaround for this. Except to wait... I think it will happen.

I remember also back in the stoneage that we used to run the TPL outside of the code of this site, it was then incorporated into the site, great. now the site has changed so the DPL cannot function under the new time scale HOWEVER! we have talentd people around that can run a code like we did back in the Jurassic period so maybe we should do that again, like it was back in the day of the Olympics etc etc.

Just saying.

The issue was (and is) that back when we did the WPL ex officio, there was considerable blowback from those who felt that team members were engaging in nefarious voting practices etc etc. By incorporating the league into the fabric of the site we were able to make it impossible to vote on your teammates' images, and we were able to provide private discussion forums for team members to communicate amongst themselves; both HUGE positives. I'm not sure it would be a good idea to go back to the "unmanaged" version...

So the only thing stopping a DPL season from happening is the fact we now have a 2 week submission frame?

Back in June, long before '2 weeks' we were told that DPL was about to happen?

I am happy with two weeks but will gladly go back if one week works for more people.

I think there are too many challenges. Voting and commenting becomes overwhelming. I think participation would increase if there were far fewer challenges.
I also think that having curated/juried challenges every few months with actual (modest) prizes would zip things up. Why don't we try and see what happens
with a few challenges each week?
