there are about 350,000 images in uploaded here. each can be up to 700 kB in size. multiplying these two numbers together makes about 250 GB. there's no way paying for that capacity makes any kind of sense.

Umm...

Until October of 2014, images were only 300KB...

True, dat. But also true, there are way more than 350,000 images. At last count, close to 1.2 million. Now, quite a few may no longer be available, but...

back of the envelope was to give an upper bound. it doesn't matter if it's half of this. or a tenth. it's still a huge burden on the servers. especially if multiple people are at it.

i'm agreeing with you jeb. i think it's a wonderful idea for a community to pull together for something like this.

it the owner cared about user experience he figure out a solution on his own.

Maybe if the owner DIDN'T care about our "experience" he'd shut the whole show down, Mike.

DPC has proven to be a way for me to continue to engage in and improve at a hobby that I've had for decades. In the past several years, since becoming a member, my work IRL has been (continues to be) pretty dang stressful (and highly rewarding). DPC helps keep me sane. Downtime and intermittent access doesn't help.

I'm a big fan of this community, despite it's current membership / participation trends. I'd gladly be part of any contribution to support improved infrastructure.

From a professional perspective, I completely disagree. The performance of the site, considering its lackluster userbase and demand, and just a few scraper bots, is inexcusably poor. Pathetically so.

I have a number of servers running for various projects in data centres in Britain, Germany, France, and the US; each of those have a full duplex 1GBit connection. In practice, after routing losses and traffic contention beyond the threshold of the data centre, that comes to around 800MBit effective upstream. Any one of those can upload this measly 250GB data set to a single user in its entirety in under 45 minutes. The fact these bots are scraping for days or weeks suggests that their downstream is far, far less than this potential upstream. And a connection like any of those servers have, can be yours... for about $40 a month. So I call bullshit. Either Langdon is seriously cheaping out on the infrastructure here, or the software is even more badly written than we thought. I personally suspect a combination of both factors.

Sargasso networks (which host dpchallenge) themselves offer "$425/month all-inclusive" for a blade server more than up to the task of hosting this site, as well as an internet connection in excess of the spec I described above. Their site is a joke, news not updated since 2008, and again from a professional perspective I can tell you that quoted price is more than five times the market average for equivalent hardware and connectivity. So our membership payments falling short is definitely not an issue to be considered here.

In short there's simply no excuse for this awful performance and instability. PHP doesn't help, of course, but ultimately it's a combination of crap software, and an owner who long ago stopped caring about the performance and operation of his little earner.

For $150 a month I could easily host dpchallenge properly; multiple servers with automatic failover, and no number of scrapers will impact user accessibility or performance.

But we all know this discussion is academic, because Langdon doesn't even take site suggestions anymore - that forum was closed years ago, and the getsatisfaction forum opened to "replace" it has been ignoring all user input for years. I just want everyone to stop trying to make excuses for Langdon. There's no valid technical reason for anything that's wrong with this site, it's all wilful neglect. As long as our subscription payments keep rolling in, he has no incentive whatsoever to give a crap about looking after or improving this place.

^^ Ah. What a wonderful, heartfelt sentiment on this Thanksgiving Day.
