I don't get it....

Having been here a week or two, to me it doesn't matter one whit what ruleset a challenge theme is other then to remember to pay a little closer attention to my composition for Minimal challenges.

Granted, that is subjective, but it seems to me that the longer one hangs around here and works at it, the less editing one needs to produce a fine image. I'm pretty much at a point where if I can produce an entry in three to five minutes, the pic's a wash.

And since nobody is competing for anything more than a virtual ribbon, nobody's getting hurt by not winning.

As of a couple days ago, I ended up with two entries on the front page simultaneously....and both of them were not very far off from minimal editing. Probably the most vigorous edits on them was cropping, which would have forced me to pay closer attention to composition had they been Minimal.

When I got here.....I sucked. You guys all put forth time, energy, experience, kindness, and skill to help me be a pretty decent photographer. And I keep working by entering challenges. Yeah, I have those two front page images, but in the last 15 challenges I've entered, I've also gotten three 4.xxx scores. Helps keep reality soundly in place.

So it would seem to me that energy spent agonizing over the count of how and what rulesets are used for a challenge would be so much better utilized for challenging oneself to submit an entry that's just that good that the ruleset didn't dictate the end result.

Just my $0.02 US......YMMV.....

Easy enough to fix - run everything under 'Standard' rules and we're good to go. :-)

Sounds fine to me. But that's certainly NOT Minimal. I thought you were an advocate for Minimal.

One of the reasons I've been so pleased with this site is that with the freedoms afforded to experiment with more radical forms of editing, I've been allowed to figure out what works for me. I think that applies to many of us. I'm also glad to see what the photogs who are wizards with PS can do. It's not my style, but I admire the time, effort, skill, and determination that goes along with spending hours on an image. It turns out that I like what I shoot closer to straight out of the camera than I used to rather than offer all Topazzed and otherwise edited images. I still will hammer an image around here and there for a specific reason, but it's no longer an across the board thing for me. Most of the reason for that is how I've grown and matured as who I am with a camera because of involvement here.

I don't want to see Expert challenges stifled simply because they aren't my style.

I like to watch MotoGP, too, but that doesn't mean I aspire to ride my bike that way, nor do I begrudge anyone with the talent & cojones to do so.

Vive la différence!

Well, I do enjoy the challenge of shooting under the Minimal rule set, and while I'd be fine if we were to never see an 'Extended' rules challenge on the front page again, I understand that there are many here that enjoy that playground.

What I mostly advocate is a fair distribution of the various challenge types on a regular basis.

Serious question: what, in your opinion, would constitute a "fair" distribution?

I think it's unequivocally the best definition of the term "Challenge".

Ah, but that to me is one of the attractions for newbies....they see these fantastic creations and want to learn how. That was part of it for me. I used to think I could fix crappy pics with PS....Heh, heh..... Surprise!!!! As it turns out, I will never be one of the wizards. But I also did learn enough to clean up minor issues.

And some of their offerings are truly spectacular. I like to see them.

Equality?????? What's wrong with you?????

I get that, I'm just not losing sleep over inequality here as I am in the neighborhood where I live with a serious gay population.

1 Extended, 1 Minimal, 2 Standard

Besides the Free Studies (one of which is Extended and the other Standard) we currently schedule 3 challenges a week; two for Members and one Open... I don't know... I'm not sure there's a groundswell of support that Minimal and Extended deserve equal time with Standard. I know when we CREATED those rulesets they were visualized as occasional departures-from-the-norm. I'm interested to see what others have to say.

Extended 40%
Standard 50%
Minimal 10%

Ok. I'd take the Free Study out of the picture since they're always going to be there and the mix is fine (1 Extended, 1 Standard).

That leaves the 3 you mention Robert. I'd look for an alternating distribution with always having 2 Standard and then switch every week with the 1 Extended or 1 Minimal.

Thanks for your input, Barry. Moving on, I wonder how much support there is in the community for this ratio? I'd be interested in hearing others weigh in. Perhaps a survey would be good, but I'd do it after the hoilidays...

Yes! but you know they can't do that. People do love & need their rules.
