What can you tell me about lensbaby??? The prices have a HUGE range and I can't figure out why. Plus the lens vary a lot...some are a bellows system, some rotate (tilt) while others seem to be a regular type lens. Can you please share your knowledge...assume that I know nothing (which is very true!!!)

I just LOVE LensBaby; at this point in time they offer a terrific range of mood-altering products. It would be helpful to know what, exactly, is your desired/visualized end product for said LensBaby? IN other words, what kind of photography will you be doing, and what do you want LensBaby to bring to the party?

You could check out contest photos on the Equipment/Lensbaby section here. I have the Lensbaby Muse, as do many others here: I think it has all the versatility one might want, and is, or at least was, reasonably priced. It is definitely something worth playing with. Especially if you are very open about what you want to bring to the party (pace, Ursus).

Just thought I would throw this in there in case you hadn't thought about it.
If you use TOPAZ products they have a Lense Effect product.

Actually I'm not sure WHAT I can do with this lens system. What got me interested was a teaching video about macro work and the gal that was teaching the class almost swooned....she showed some examples and it peaked my interest. Y'all know how I love flowers/macro!!!

This is what I started wondering about. Now that we can achieve this effect digitally (for those who are either $-challenge, or just plain lazy), is there a real difference between using the lens and applying the effect in post?

The second (non-destructive) method gives you the option of ending up with two distinctly different versions of the image? The first forces you to pre-visualize the desired effect and figure out how to capture it in the field (an educational/intellectual exercise).

Also means more expense and more to carry.

No comparison between operating in the field and post mortem. Think about it.

The nature of a LensBaby lies deeply within the land-of-unexpected. LensBaby promotes a new way of seeing, which promotes a new way of visualization, which (ideally) prmotes a better unity between the photographer and the ephemeral ur0reality that lies beneath what we mostly choose to call * R E A L I T Y *... Software emulation is cool in its own right, but it just cuts you off cold from the zen-of-seeing that LensBaby promotes.
