Challenge: Dominant K

Select and shoot a scene that is dominant in one range of the temperature scale. The trick is to show and know the dominant color. In the title of your photo include the K value that your image represents (i.e. - cool blue may be at 8000k while sunrise warm could be 2500k).

Minimal rules please.

Hopefully this challenge will appeal to a larger audience as we have winter (blues) in some areas that our DPC members reside, versus summer (warms) for others. Not to say that the full range of color temps aren't available anywhere in the world. :-)

That's an interesting concept. I wonder if it's a bit abstract/esoteric? I'll be very interested to see what opinions weigh in.

As someone pretty familiar with color temps I'm also a little unclear as to how one would show/tell; perhaps you (Barry) could post a couple of examples of what you'd be looking for.

A related concept which might be easier to explain would be to use a custom White Balance setting (or color filter/gel) to influence your composition (also suitable for Minimal editing). I have a couple of fairly recent examples of that if you're interested.

I'd have to pull these into a photo editor to confirm where there are on the scale. Can do that later ... have some other things going on at the moment. :-)

Some examples in the meantime ... basically you're going to want an image with a dominant color ... and that will be your "Dominant K".

So, we can go with warm or cool, or do we have to get into technical specifications?

Alright, so these (all Minimal editing) were taken using a custom WB to shift the color ...

and this was just how the light looked ...

However I think it's a bit much to expect people to accurately specify an exact color temperature in their title, and I for one don't want to have to be analyzing whether someone's photo is "really" 5050°K or "only" 4900° ... maybe just call it "Dominant Kolor" and avoid confusing people with physics ...

Yeah, perhaps it's too complicated. I thought, this being a "learning" site and all, that a challenge like this could be enlightening. :-)

It's not like a challenge entry would be DQ'd for missing (or not even listing) the K value. Nor should the voter be expected to "grade / judge" the accuracy.

Just thought it might be fun to add a technical twist. No biggee.

I would definitely like to see a challenge where the photos must concentrate on warms or colds.

I like the idea of the technical challenge, but I think your description makes this feel a little too limited, when it's not supposed to be. A much softer definition like "Compose a photo that is mainly made up of either warm or cool colors." would likely work nicer.

I'm not saying it's a bad suggestion at all -- it just needs to be posted/phrased in such a way that most people can understand what the objective might be without an extremely elaborate description or discussion thread. Do the photos I posted fit your idea of what to try for?

FWIW we have in the past had "cold" challenges and "warm" challenges. So in my mind this is basically a "warm or cold" challenge, because I doubt any "K" that wasn't distinctly one or the other would be dramatic enough to have a chance.

I think I'll suggest a Warm III (or whatever the number is) ... under Minimal of course. :-) Cold was run late last year.

Paul, most of your examples work just fine (the BIF maybe not as much - the others have a definite dominant color hue).
