The last Minimal challenge was basically a treasure hunt (or build your own strange 'Off Color' item). Now we have a One Second challenge (this one always draws a large crowd ).

Are you guys intentionally trying to generate low response challenge themes for Minimal rules?

Why can't we just have a "normal" challenge? You know, take your camera out and capture a basic image where you need to concentrate primarily on camera settings rather than jumping thru hoops to do something obscure?

I agree.

Perhaps a monthly Minimal FS is warranted - or bi-monthly?

... wait for it ...

I can understand wanting something normal for minimal, but I really do like minimal challenges to really show how difficult/impressive it can be to get it right in camera. It makes a nice challenge and helps appreciate the work.

Weren't you just complaining there weren't enough minimal challenges? Now there's a minimal challenge. It's pretty easy, really. Set the shutter speed to a second, and go out and see what you can do. Challenging challenge. No hoops. Just a one second exposure. Or you could shoot hoops. That might be kinda cool at a second....

A minimal free study is an excellent idea ... after all, we do have an expert one...

I am happy to shoot minimal, almost always do anyway. One second.. just set the camera in motion. Easy peasy. Stop the complaining please.

Currently the cadence of Standard / Extended monthly challenges is pretty convenient and easy to remember.
Any thoughts on where to fit in a Monthly minimal challenge?

We could do a minimal speed challenge once a month?

Either the third week of the month (if we want three FSs monthly), or else alternate Minimal and Extended for the mid-month FS and have six of each/year ...

I like that too. Haven't done anything for extended free study in a long time. Would definitely do a minimal, though. (Still would like cropping... :P )

People, monthly Free Studies are where we submit pictures that we love that didn't happen in synchronicity with a given challenge. We go through the past month's shoots and see what we have, mostly. At least *I* do... The problem with a Minimal Free Study is that most of us would have to shoot specifically for it because we don't shoot regularly in JPG. That's my take on it anyway.

Regarding the "Second Chance" challenge, it seems to me a challenge with a forced 1-second exposure is an EXCELLENT topic for Minimal Editing. There's no way to rescue blah images in post on this one, so you gotta get to know your gear and what it does. Again, just my opinion...

Ummmm ... how would you explain the monthly Extended Free Study then?

Well, speaking for myself, I look through the month's images and decide what I can do with 'em, and then do it. I'm aware, of course, that some folks spend the whole month thinking about and preparing their entries...

I hate minimal!! (my opinion)
I don't see the point of it. Prove we can take pictures? Oh my god, I can't hold a camera straight... btw, what is shoot in minimal? Is there another way to shoot pictures? Recently we had a Graffiti Challenge in minimal and this would have been so much better in standard.
Learning to edit pictures to make it pop more doesn't hurt anyone. You still need to have a good picture from the beginning.
Are the minimal editing lovers afraid not able to compete against edited pictures? Every challenge can be entered as minimal.

This minimal lover is not afraid of anything.
I just happen to think it's a good thinking exercise, just as learning to use ps to it's best advantage is a good exercise.
Doing both is definitely worthwhile.

ah, Georges, au contraire: it is perhaps the non-minimal editing lovers who have fear. I think most minimal lovers (!) like PennyStreet have no fear whatsoever.

The idea of a speed challenge is cool.

I don't like the idea of switching out extended FS with minimal every other month at all. I like my monthly extended FS. The only thing I might enter in a monthly minimal FS would be some random phone shot...which I kind of do anyway...so...meh. :-}
05/31/2017 02:53:25 PM · #24
... and THERE it is! The winner. LOL

Wondered how long it would take for someone to say "you can enter a Minimal edited photo in any challenge".

Ahh ... but it's much more fun to compete with everyone on the same playing field. The same restrictions, etc...

As for needing a monthly Minimal FS, I don't think we really need that (even as much as I enjoy the challenge). I've learned to live with the Extended FS only as a 2nd Free Study basically. I enter whatever I want. Kind of a "throwaway" entry to play with.

Totally agree. I don't see the point of setting up my camera to "process" RAW for me into a jpeg. Nothing I would ever do other than for an entry, and not worth the effort just to enter a challenge.
